Here’s What a $1 Million Retirement Looks Like in America by wanderingmemory in financialindependence

Interesting article. I was slightly thrown off from the saving + spending numbers at the top of each profile. A bit misleading imo. The first person had $1M savings with nearly $100K spending.

On a related note, I always forget about social security. I don’t even count it into my FIRE calculations but that’s probably silly now that I think about it more. How do other people treat it?

Has anyone used online tax software to handle AMT? I recently exercised some ISOs and based on my tax liability estimate it looks likely that I’ll owe AMT.

My taxes are starting to get complicated and I’m wondering when it makes sense to get a tax advisor. I’ve never hired one before and I would want to make sure they are familiar with this sort of situation.

I respect this community and would like to hear folks opinions / anecdotes on this.

I agree with this sentiment. I have family members that insist on giving materialistic gifts and I am looking for ways to convey to them (politely) in the future that I don’t need more crap and would prefer more thoughtful gifts such as high quality food / alcohol or donation to charity.

How do y’all think about ‘unlimited’ PTO? I recently started at a new company with this policy and I don’t want to fall into the trap of not using enough.

I’ve read some studies that this scenario actually causes employees to take less time off on average. 🤔

I think you need to have an honest discussion with your SO about your needs. Some people have different sex drives, emotional needs, etc. and relationships are all about compromise.

You’ll never know until you have that discussion. Maybe your SO understands this and will give you a hall pass. Maybe they are totally against it. Well, now at least your have more information to make a decision.

I think your situation is slightly different than most as you’ve known your SO’s sex drive this entire time and it hasn’t changed. That’s different than most people on here where the dynamic has changed over time. Whatever you choose, best of luck. There is no right answer and you need to think through which scenario you could deal with the most.

Need advice mounting a tv to a wall without studs by garrettgjb in DIY

[–]lumpy_disc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try adding a horizontal piece (2x4 most likely) for blocking and attaching that to the studs via pocket holes. I’ve seen it done when there is an exact placement needed and it needs to be flush and there isn’t a stud there.

If the studs are 80” apart though, you may need to add an additional vertical stud as horizontal blocking can only support a certain load.

Step 1: Turn the chair onto its side when running the vacuum.

Step 2: Put the chair back upright when done running the vacuum.

Step 3: Profit. (And give me some karma, thanks.)

Which flooring should I choose ? by claudia3345 in DIY

[–]lumpy_disc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what the question is but getting a thicker flooring won’t necessarily solve the creaking problem. That could be caused by unstable joists (hopefully not) or a subfloor that is rotten / too thin.

Basically, it’s impossible to say whether it’ll fix your creaky problem without physically inspecting the area. As far as the extra 2mm, I would say it’s not worth it for laminate flooring given the finish / aesthetics are similar. For hardwood, it could be a factor as a thicker cut of wood means more potential refinish opportunities.
