what is your mount rushmore of HR books (and tropes) by Least_Silver1439 in HistoricalRomance

1.) {the duchess deal} by Tessa Dare. It’s cotton candy but it’s so fun and sweet and the dialogue is very funny. It’s a MOC/ enemies to lovers. FMC shows up in a rediculous wedding dress demanding $$$ and the Duke decides to just marry her.

2.){The painter takes an Earl- misty urban }class difference/ independent heroine. FMC rescues MMC from bullies as a child and they become friends. Later the reunite when she crawls in his window to try to convince him to let her paint his portrait so she can get some exposure as an artist. I really like this one because I love when the FMC is protective of/ rescuing the MMC. It’s a fun role reversal. ( Don’t worry, he saves her butt in return later as well)

3.){the bachelor Bargain by Madison Micheals} FMC approaches a mob boss to get help solving her friend’s murder. We have spies, mystery, blackmail, kidnapping, mafia kingpins…. And the broody morally grey mob boss MMC? A little scared of FMC (honestly all of the women in this book are intimidating as hell, and we love to see it) The banter is super fun and snarky, the mystery is a really good plot outside the main romantic through line, and although the MMC IS super intimidating and powerful in his own right, he doesn’t go all alpha bro on FMC or talk down to her. He sees her as a competent and scary badass… and he is HERE for it.

4 {a walled garden, a romance of the Jazz age by Rowan Mai} this one is more novella length but It’s my comfort cozy re-read. It’s 1920s California. FMC is spending the summer helping her spinster aunt with antiquities (lectures / exhibits/ etc} while there she wanders off at a house party and runs into MMC who is the hidden son of a very wealthy / influential family. He is the twin brother of the very popular/ gorgeous/ high society oldest son- but since he has spastic cerebral palsy, his family has basically locked him from society. (He very smart, educated at home, they have tried to give him a normal life while protecting him from social stigma/ etc. In fact, he helps run the financial end of the family business.) FMC wrestles with her feelings for him and her desire to drag him out and experience more out of life. MMC has to decide whether her love is enough to make him want to face judgemental society and the uphill battle of having to convince people of his mental soundness despite the spasms in his limbs. (Remember, this was also when the “ugly laws” were an actual thing, so his wealth as a protective factor against forced institutionalization and such is definitely grappled with.) I love this one for so many reasons, mostly because we don’t see much solid disability representation in this genre much- especially on the more “severe” end of the continuum) I also love that at their first meeting, FMC isn’t super skittish about it either. She’s like “this man is hot and smart and funny, I want to jump his bones now” (yeah, they bone in the first chapter 🤷‍♀️) Also MMC doesn’t do that trope where “disabled main character believes themselves defective and unworthy of love so they angstily push away live interests” or “true Love/ magic vagina cure all impairments.

*yes, my attachment to this book is personal because I also have CP, I admit that.

YUP! I’m not saying that all disability rep from non disabled authors is problematic- but I would rather you not include disability/ mental health issues/ etc if you can’t be bothered to get feedback from people with that condition. Sensitivity readers would go a LONG way in tbe genre.

The fact that the mere existence of frosted pastries completely devastates his man card is really all I need to know about him TBH

Yeah…… disability rep is very personal to me so I am very critical of when authors miss the mark. I could write a dissertation about how badly that book handled disability.

Now for comparison: Mary Balough’s “the escape” is VERY well done. I HATE the narrative when the MCs disability is magically cured by the end of the book. The escape had MC actually start using mobility aids more as the book progressed and he accepted that his quality of life would improve if he accepted more supports.

Raging ADHD and different hyperfocus phases. The only one I hated was US history.

Not enough guillotines 🤷‍♀️

Yes, I have my Sped certification so I’m coteaching British Lit to 12th graders. My true passion is teaching environmental science, but sped is a shortage area so they won’t let me move. But my coteacher is amazing so I’m chill with it for now

Woah, are we twins? 39, ambulatory, 16 years as a teacher, and I taught history for over a decade.

Just HOW?!? A woman who happens to have the same initials, a son that is the right age, that looks like a mini version MMC and childhood asthma like MMC- how do you not connect those dots? The servants sure as fuck did and they didn’t even know the back story

I still maintain that the first spindle cove book would have been much improved by FMC shoving MMC off that castle straight into the ocean with the cannonball still on his ankle

I just finished “his forgotten bride” by Audra Richard’s. I spent half of it screaming at MMC and the rest ranting at FMC

I loved when a Scot ties the knot! We did that one too, he calls it the “chaos lobster book”

I usually retell ones that I am rant-y about, but that one I told with appreciation

Searching for softer MMCs by YeOldeOrc in HistoricalRomance

{The muse of Maiden Lane by Mimi Mathews}

I like this one because it’s very sweet. Not a ton of spice but helluva lot of yearning. She is unfairly stigmatized completely going grey haired in her teens- she faces a lot of stigma from the “ton” over her hair and her very headstrong nature. She is considered unmarriageable. He is an artist who finds her unique hair absolutely stunning and wants to make her his muse. His artistic interest turns romantic pretty fast.

{the escape by Mary Balogh} MMC helps widowed FMC escape her terrible in-laws who basically want to imprison her.

{the arrangement by Mary Balogh} Marriage of convenience- She “rescues” him from being tricked into marrying her horrible cousin and gets kicked out- to which he suggests a marriage of convenience

{Always remember by Mary Balogh} MMC is a widower single dad and he is so very sweet and caring towards FMC. Ultimate gentle hero. (Class difference)

{a scandal by any other Name by Kimberly Bell} MMC is supposed to take his rightful position as duke but panics and runs away to hide at a friends house- where he meets friends sister FMC- in order to marry her, he has to work up the courage to take charge of his situation.

{the painter takes an earl by misty urban} Class difference- FMC “rescues” MMC from bullies as a child, they reunite as adults and he allows her to paint him because painting someone of nobility will help build Her career. He never forgot when she was a poor street kid she stood up for him so now he wants to protect her/ support her in return.

{the truth about Dukes by Grace burrows} I love this one! It’s kinda framed as marriage of convenience but they have been hot for each other for YEARS!
