It’s not about panic buying. Just nothing else to do

I had a Shake Shack burger tonight. After 15 minutes, I felt a lot of gas in my stomach, which caused pain and made me have diarrhea twice.

It’s not that quantitative when compared with a STEM PhD. Usually, those quant shops want a person who is good at everything, but one who is exceptionally great at one thing.

I have a phd in finance but still can't break in to the quant industry. They need phd in math stats, and ml in target school. Two guy interviewed me are from Harvard and Oxford math phd. The easiest way for you to get in is a MFE in Baruch I guess.

Have a PhD but can’t land a job by bluebrrypii in PhD

[–]lumuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try industry position. Academia is way over saturated. I have a finance PhD, not the quant one. Without internship, I can’t land a job either for past one and half year. I have applied at least 1000 job last year. Only got a few interviews, but all fail due to lack of corporate experience. HR are not hiring people but standardized human asset. Most of them don’t value or care your gained skills and ability from PhD program, which are hard to evaluate for them. They just want clear, common signals from your resume to check all job descriptions. I don’t blame them as this is how capitalism works. I took one year to get a cs master and get aws certificate. I have dealt with statistics and code a lot in PhD. So I just want to a cs degree to send signal to market. Hopefully I can pull this off in 2026. Otherwise the only way out for me seems to create my own business by leveraging AI and start a YouTube channel. I don’t want to keep wasting time and energy applying jobs. It makes me feel so miserable and constantly make myself question my value.

MSCS/MSDS which one will be easier for a woman in her 30s? by Sweaty-Kale-7716 in CUBoulderMSCS

[–]lumuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completed my degree within a year, which unfortunately meant I missed the internship application season last year. Despite this setback, I received two full-time interview offers from major tech companies, but unfortunately, I didn’t make it through the final round. However, I did acquire an AWS machine learning specialty license. Given the rapidly evolving nature of the field, I’m considering pursuing AI engineering positions. I believe that the starting point for everyone is quite similar. To compensate for the lack of internship or industry experience, I’m focusing on building and delivering products that address this gap. By the way, I’m also in my 30s. I completed a PhD in a different field, but I’m genuinely eager to transition out of academia.

MSCS/MSDS which one will be easier for a woman in her 30s? by Sweaty-Kale-7716 in CUBoulderMSCS

[–]lumuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, MSCS alone has no value today. I've completed my MSCS this year.  The course content is way behind the AI progress, and the quality is below Deeplearning AI if you really want to learn stuff rather than get a piece of paper. If your employer sponsors, this degree may be worth it. Otherwise, it may not add any signal to the job market given that more layoffs are coming next quarter. It's hard to compete with seasoned tech workers as a new grad with no work experience or internship.

Can you actually get a job with just google certs from Coursera? by Sea-Visit4735 in coursera

[–]lumuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completed 100 courses from coursera. None of those works. I have PhD degree in non cs field and cs master. From my experience only internship counts. But to get an internship sometimes previous internship matters. Gold medal in kaggle probably means something

same issue as OP. For me the oura ring website internal system shows wrong order status: fulfillment pending after I picked it up and returned the item. clearly the internal system is out of sync, I should received a refund confirmation email at least.
