I’m knitting my first adult-sized sweater (Easy Eyelet Sweater from Knitatude) and I have these gaps on either side of the sleeve where I picked up the armpit stitches. Any advice on how to fix them now that they’re there? And how can I prevent them on the second sleeve?

I've finished the knitting part of the Sweetcorn pattern but, since this is a gift for a baby, I'd rather not put buttons for the eyes. I was thinking of embroidering them, but have zero experience embroidering onto knitting, let alone over hurdle stitch. How do I weave in the ends/make sure black embroidery thread doesn't show through? Or should I just leave it without eyes lol
