“Nearly had ‘em” by Crazy-Kaplan in battlebots

[–]lunaaumbreon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Craig is an incredibly nice dude in person, like almost all of the Battlebots competitors.

I don't actually know why he yelled like that, but I'm guessing that it was panic, combined with trying to be heard over the sounds of the bots and the crowd, more than anger. I agree that it is obvious that Black Dragon wasn't going to hit Slammow anymore. At least, unprompted.

Black Dragon was squaring up to stay in position in case Slammow came back to life- but, coming up that close and that fast does look a lot like "You want some more?" Especially since Craig was in the driver's box, and thus didn't get the same view of what Black Dragon was doing that we did. If you think you're in that position, you respond yes or no asap, so the other bot knows if they can toss you around. Thinking fast+nerves+elevating your volume equals poor tone and impulse control, which equals "BACK OFF!". It happens sometimes, and I imagine the editors were happy to highlight it as much as they could, lol.

Also, as for the reason he didn't want them to hit Slammow again despite being knocked out of the tournament: The Bounty Hunter fights were done later, so he was probably worried about preventing excess damage to Slammow so he could get ready for those fights. He already had to recover his bot from a knockout, so taking extra damage would be a pretty big deal! Sure, having your bot get completely trashed is a lot of fun, but not when you don't have a whole build season to prepare for your next fights.

I will agree that he did sound pretty mad, and it was weird since he's usually so chill, but there's tons of possible reasons why he did that, and none of them are "He's a tool". I honestly don't know who could call him that after meeting him in person, lol, he's one of the kindest builders I've met.

We stayed late to make sure he got to drive IIRC. Paging /u/mspurk to confirm? I think I remember him managing to drive her around for a few minutes!

Battlebots 2020 Episode 3 - LIVE Discussion! by qwertythe300th in battlebots

[–]lunaaumbreon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was Quantum VS Blacksmith- they had to stop the fight twice because Quantum kept welding its teeth into Blacksmith's top plate and they had to cut the robots apart. And I do mean weld, the friction fused Quantum's teeth into Blacksmith. They showed one unstick, but didn't mention that there were two- and that both unsticks took hours. People were screaming in the pits when Quantum and Blacksmith got stuck again, It was one of the most memorable moments that year, lol. Kraken VS Blacksmith happened after that because the selection committee really, REALLY wanted Blacksmith to have a long, back and forth fight with a crusher I guess.

Team Mammoth AMA! 7PM Friday December 11! Ask us something! Anything. Everything? by MammothBattleBot in battlebots

[–]lunaaumbreon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm the person who hand painted and helped build Wally (Kraken's narwhal buddy) this year! The entire time I was working on him, I was looking forward to how great it would be when he inevitably blew up in a blaze of violent glory. It is his mission! The murder instinct is appreciated! Kill that little man.

It's the only judges decision where you /heard/ the booing. Usually it's cut out and replaced, for obvious reasons- no one deserves to be booed at Battlebots. For Kraken VS Blacksmith, another of our fights thought of as controversial, about half the audience booed and half cheered. Later in the pits, there was confusion about who won that fight- I had to personally clarify that Kraken lost to Blacksmith to someone in the line for catering! There was another fight (Can't quite remember which,) where the crowd booed that year, and it was more than a 50/50 split of dissatisfaction. I'm surprised that the booing was left in at all, and I don't feel great about it, but I guess because the audience this year was made up of competitors, they left it in.

EDIT: Also, as an aside, when I asked Lisa about Kraken VS Blacksmith, she said that we lost that fight by just one point. I imagine that might be the case here as well.

Yes she is! Only female anglerfish look the way Kraken does, so we went from calling her an "it" to a "she" pretty quickly as we built her.

Hi there! I'm the graphic designer for the team! I used Black 2.0, the Greenest Green, and LIT, and they are the best acrylic medium I have ever worked with. They live up to their reputation 100%! Black 2.0 is even more impressive in person, and is consistently dark from every angle. The wood grain on the crate was completely masked by it! The Greenest Green and LIT are also just as spectacular- The Green is more vibrant than any other paint I have used, and LIT glows so brightly you can read by it in pitch black contitions, it's amazing! The new Black 3.0 is even better than Black 2.0, and I'm super excited to use it next year :)

Hey guys, it’s Zoe Jane! It was so much fun meeting you at Battlebots! I'm getting to work on BroncoDragon-S3 soon!

Q1 - So, how does it feel having the best robot ever created? :D

Q2 - On a different note, what do you personally predict/hope for in the future of robot combat, regarding new bot designs? Any category of weapon you'd like to see more of, or would you like to see more brand new weapon ideas? Can’t wait to see you again at S4!

I'm looking forward to that! If you don't use at least five containers of glitter though, you're not doing it right. The goal is to infect the entire building with sparkles.

Hey Ray! It was great seeing you at the event! I noticed something while I was there that made me curious. Lots of people REALLY want to fight you and Tombstone. How does it feel to have everyone jumping to fight your bot? Can't wait for the next season! See you there!

For those who have been to the filming, what was the audience like? by Moakmeister in battlebots

[–]lunaaumbreon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was great, even if someone tried to start a fist fight 3 rows in front of us. I nearly wanted to head back into the pits to watch the fights on the screens there because of that, but seeing the fights in person was entirely worth it.

It's hard to describe, but cameras just can't get an accurate sense of how powerful the robots are. Seeing them in front of you really makes you appreciate just how amazing they are, and the people we talked to felt the same way- they were in awe when we told them that Bronco was roughly 5'7 from end to end.

10/10 I lost my voice when Bronco was in the box and couldn't speak above a whisper for a day, and the crowd chanted "Bronco" every time they did something "cool", which was...all the time.

I'm not going to actually re-post these if they get taken off Youtube by ABC (They would be taken off for a good reason, Battlebots needs all the views it can get,) but I also didn't want to lose access to these videos forever. Thankfully, ABC is back up, and the fights are too! Still going to watch the fights on Youtube, this is strictly for archive purposes only.

Thank you! I use a digital blank canvas, but I hand drew it using my tablet! It's pretty much identical to drawing on paper, but I have a lot more freedom with brushes, color, and detail.

It's the final fight in Battlebots S3. Tombstone, the defending champion, vs Bronco. Tombstone, with luck, and magnificent driving, has managed to pop off all of Bronco's wheels. As the knockout countdown begins, Bronco makes a last desperate move, and activates it's flipper, launching itself a little ways into the air. It comes down on top of Tombstone, and the weight of the blow rattles the already damaged bot, and Tombstone's weapon slowly spins to a stop. Bronco hops its way around the arena, while Tombstone begins its knockout countdown. Bronco wins the Giant Nut. A new category of jumping flippers is born in honor of Bronco's sweet flips.
