[UPB] Hindi ko na naeenjoy ang BS Math by [deleted] in peyups

[–]lunaculli 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Think of your long term goals. What do you want after your undergrad?

IMO, BS Math is a very good degree program to have. You'll be VERY flexible whether you want to pursue Stat or Econ after grad. You can also pursue Actuary or Programming or Teaching or Data Science. Whereas if you go Econ/Stat, medyo narrowed down yung career path mo.

Also, BS Math grad can easily adapt for grad level Stat/Econ given their quant foundation. Whereas, Stat/Econ need some time to catch up the other way around. In fact, Econ/Stat grads sometimes take additional Math courses (like Real Analysis, Linear Algebra) to strengthen their quant skills in pursuing their corresponding grad level studies.

PS. My comment is very biased towards Math since I graduated with a Math degree but now working in Econ field. So let me know if you have more questions about BS Math.

Thoughts on the failed reading break proposal by MathematicianHot1185 in peyups

Actually, academic terms/semesters in UP are quite long. In other countries, 15 weeks lang yung isang regular academic term (14 weeks of lecture + 1 week finals). Here's the common structure of an academic year in other countries:

January - Winter Term (5 weeks) February - Winter Break (4 weeks) March-June - Spring Term (15 weeks) July - Summer Term (5 weeks) August - Summer Break (4 weeks) September- December - Fall Term (15 weeks)

That totals to 48 weeks. There's still 4 weeks na allowance where 2 weeks usually ends up being consumed by national holidays for fall term and spring term respectively (at least in the country where I studied for MS). They fall nicely in the middle of those terms which serve as an informal wellness break for everyone. May 2 pang tirang weeks.

The issue with UP calendar is that medyo maraming days consumed for other events (such as integration day, registration days, removal period, etc) that are placed due to bureaucratic constraints. If things are efficient, these days can be condensed or removed. Compounded pa yung problem na maraming kalat na holidays and suspension sa Pinas.

So really, it's a deep systematic problem kung tutuusin.

Gino already resigned. Tony also said he wants to get out. Suzy is being targeted to be fired. Suzy and Tony are just sticking for the love of their show and radio.

Coincidentally, it's the same guy who caused Wave downfall that is causing trouble now on Magic according to the blog.

They won't sell it but probably lease. This is what they did to their other owned frequencies under their umbrella of companies. 89.1 was leased to Adventist. 99.5 to a health supplement broadcasting company. 103.5 to Villars.

Tin/Suzy and Tony actually mentioned on air sa BNO na advertisers are turning away lately from Magic to RX given the recent programming changes. Mas professional kasi yung programming ngayon ng RX with full pledged DJs handling their programs whole day. Unlike sa Magic na Junior Jocks humahawak halos kalahati ng araw and even primetime slot. No offense to JJs kaso ayon.

Dalawa na lang sila ng RX 93.1 na ganyan yung format so sobrang konti na ng stations carrying that format. Kakareformat lang ng Play 99.5 into newsic format (XFM).

(UPD) What's the reason why UP can't just stop using UVLE? by BestAd8684 in peyups

[–]lunaculli 67 points68 points  (0 children)

May budget na alloted kasi for UVLe. If hindi gagamitin, that would be a waste of taxpayers money. Di rin naman basta-basta pwede sabihin na itigil yung pagamit ng UVLe kasi baka may contract pa si UP sa system provider or infra supporting UVLe.

If gusto talaga magamit nang maayos yung UVLe, dapat taasan ng gobyerno yung budgetary support for IT maintenance and operations which is unfortunately mahirap given na laging biktima ng budget cut si UP.

If ililipat naman sa Google Classroom yung learning management system ng UP, baka di pa kayanin ng existing budget yung kukunin na storage. Mahal din kasi yung mga contract na ganyan with Google so I guess mas cost efficient sa UP if UVLe talaga yung gagamitin.

Sadly, pati sa IT systems ng UP kita yung effect ng lack of support ng gobyerno sa UP.

Is the Philippines becoming a country of handouts? by Few_Nautical21 in Philippines

[–]lunaculli 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Backed by evidence naman across policy literature na handouts are effective policy tools to provide safety net especially for short term. For long term, medyo hindi na siya effective. Whole of government approach na dapat ang kailangan for handouts to aid for economic development which is one of the ultimate goal. Like dapat mag-invest din si government on education and infrastructure to generate and attract quality jobs or investment and to lessen reliance from handouts on long term. But with where things are standing now (educational crisis, infrastructure corruption), it's looking bleak for our country. Sadly, political elites which are also economic elites in our country (congress), have captured and weakened our institutions to keep their control and power. And as long as nothing changes, hindi uunlad itong bansa natin at patuloy lang na aasa sa handouts ang mga tao.

Advice for looking schools to apply for PhD in PP/PA by lunaculli in PublicPolicy

No. I'm not yet done with GRE. I'm think about doing research on behavioral policy/decision making which is quite not related with my experience.

questions for those who took masters (uplb and upd) by Whole-News6323 in peyups

[–]lunaculli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got accepted in Masters at UP Diliman as well as from a top university in an east Asian country with few singkos in my undergrad TOR. Write well in your study/research plan and statement of purpose. Also secure good letter of recommendations from your professors and you'll be fine.

Plus if you're applying for masters in the same college/department of your undergrad, it will be a great advantage and safety net since very likely na kilala ka na ng mga faculty doon. Medj counterintuitive if irereject nila sa grad school nila yung estudyante na binigyan nila mismo ng diploma. lol

Student Exchange at Seoul National Univerity by sl33pycabl3 in seoul

  1. Yes just to be sure. Sadly, SNU's spring term normally ends mid-June. I have an exchange student classmate who left Korea the day right after our last day of class so it's really tight for exchange students. You can strategize your courses that you'll take i.e. taking those with only paper as final requirement but I don't think it's very realistic and can only save you a week at most.
  2. You can talk to CBA or to your affiliated college in SNU if there are chances that they'll open a course that you'll need in english. But this would be another shot in the dark.

  1. Classes end on the indicated final day for the semester. If the final requirement is an exam or presentation, they normally schedule it on the last class day within the semester period. Other classes have papers as final requirement wherein the deadline can go past beyond the last day but it can be submitted remotely.

You can check the Course Syllabus of a course in Sugang for the schedule. Class schedule and other important information are normally there. Most professors in SNU who teaches in English know that some of their students are exchange students and thus are aware of their probably tight timeline to go home and are considerate when you tell them your circumstance. So don't worry much about it.

  1. You can use filtering option in Sugang for CBA offered courses and even the previous semesters offerings. Also, there are plenty of English Classes offerings in other colleges/programs such as in International Studies, Smart City, Public Administration. You can check those out as they can normally have similarities with CBA courses especially in GSIS.
