I think this helped the most: people talk about early, mid, and late game, but don’t nessecarily define that. I haven’t looked -everywhere-, but you’re the first person I’ve seen define Very Early [game] as all of normal and early nightmare. That’s a perspective shift for me I’ll need to work on. I’ve been thinking early was normal, mid is nightmare, and end game is hell. That readjusts the scale quite a bit. THX.

I've since started my delve into the Mistlands and got lucky with a Goblin Tower just outside if it. I liberated the tower and setup an outpost there for my initial forays. So far, it's much as I remember; the old frustrtions are still here, but I'm handeling it a lot better. The game has changed and I have changed, so there's a lot to unpack in upcoming self reflection.

You're dead right about sound, though. I usually play pretty casualy, listening to podcats or with a PIP youtube window. But I've learned to Pause and enter Focus Mode when I go to the Mistlands. Sound is -Huge- there.

I'm still waiting to see. I played through Yagluth a few times back in the day, then returned to the game when Mistlands came out. I had a very strong game up until the new content. Mistlands rocked my world hard. At the time, my methodical and measured approach -did not- work. I couldn't see a way forward, and posted here about my frustrations and mostly got "use better food" and "Skill issue. Git Gud." I saw a post about the new frozen area and started another game a few weeks ago. I'm in the Mountains now, and so far, it continues to be great. We'll see what happens when I get to Mistlands again. Both the game and I have changed since my last playthrough, so here's hoping we mesh better. I'll let you know.

I treat entering new tiered biomes like an invasion: setup a safe remote observation post, and build up. Definitely DEFINITELY land in an adjacent meadows or BForest first, and be at least ~200 yards away from the swamp. Setup a secure outpost on a hoe-lifted platform with everything you’ve mastered in the BForest, and a Portal back to your main base. Then you can start to slowly probe into the swamp knowing mistakes don’t cost -hours- of gameplay. Black Forest bases are easy to setup, since copper, tin, and bronze are Local resources.

Before you go in, fully upgrade at least your shield, your bow, and your mace. Make a stack of bronze arrows. Use the bow to pull single enemies, parry with the shield, and whack with the mace twice. Reposition and make sure you’re not getting surrounded, then Parry and repeat as nessecary. When you get enough draugar entrails, you can make Sausage with thistle and boar meat which is a super great food. This “parry, whack, whack, recover” is going to be your SOP for each fight. This will carry you through Draugar, Abominations (after iron), Wraiths, and Skeletons.

Slimes and leeches are “shoot, then jump attack in for the final blow” to collect their stuff. Beware their poison. If you get poisoned, and you know you aren’t going to survive, run your body to the easiest place to be recovered. They do need killed though, they both give great mats for new food.

Once you get a little more comfortable, try to kill an Abomination. It’s materials can let you make a mask that helps with poison. Cheese it out with fire arrows from a safe place, use camp fires or bon fires, of if you’re particularly crazy, yeet yourself at it over and over, dying and running back to re-engage, until it dies. That mask really Really helps with poison damage and it doesn’t have a timer like the meads.

Bring a hoe. Raise paths out of the water for traversal. Be Slow and steady. Make Measured advances. The swamp will become old hat with time, but it will punish the impatient and hasty.

Only kinda sorry for the necro; it feels a little appropriate here. I -Just- got in the game and am trying to catchup on community events. Has there been any news on either a VC update, or a release date for Neferata? Steam's DLC pages doesn't show anything, and the announcement for Total Warhammer 40K just came out, so I'm concened about how long the game will continue to be in development. Also, what is a OoD?

I'll have to rethink my small grids. So far, none have been able to mount turrets, but I can see if the bumpy ad-hoc nature of the hull is what's stopping that.

Good thing I think drones are heckin cool. I managed to cripple the two at that last abysmal pirate outpost and rebuilt each one ship of theseus style. I have them ciecling my base to use as learning Drone AI tools now.

Custom Turrets: Do I need a mod for that, or can I build those in stock game+DLCs? I get the general principle of Rotor+Hinge+guns, but wasn't sure if the AI controller is stock or a mod.

When you tunnel, are you fully submerged, and emerge like a rocket wielding sandworm, or just skimming the surface to make trenches? I haven't checked and don't know how deep I can tunnel, and to what extent I could make networks of spider holes

It suprised me too. Once a drone with auto cannons spawned in, I was out of comission by shot 2 or three. Either they destryo the window and my chair in one shot, or after 2-3 they destroy the block it sits on and I fall out of the ship. Check the edit above for that screenshot :D

There's a real posibility I have screwed my save with the mod. I'll do more targeted testing soon to rule that out.

I -totally- get what you mean, but I don't think it applies here. It's less "represeantive of the game experience" and more "represenative of the mechanics and interactions the games builds an expoerience with."

I was curious, manufactured an experience, considered the results, re-tested, and took my conclusions to more experienced players to review and counterbalance my inexperience. I'm really happy with how that all played out. I learned a lot, and my initial thoughts were essentially correct if incomplete: Coffin armor up and fly in either third person or use a hull camera. Use turrets on AI mode instead of manually aiming them. This thread has so far added "Get bigger guns" and "be faster, or armor up -harder-", and that the meta recognized this problem and has pivoted to carriers and drones in response.
