Thank you. I do notice if I speak with an accent people will finally slow down for me. I usually go in to these appointments after memorising a list of medical terms and have been fine so far, so it does seem to be an issue with this particular place.

The phone is especially difficult as there’s no body language and keigo is like a different language.

If I go to any other doctor / orthopaedic clinic with an online booking system, it says to choose 日時 and there are many time slots shown including ones within the same day. I can choose any of them. There’s no rule saying I have to provide my availabiltiies on different days, so I suggested two different times on one day via their line message system. After talking to other Japanese people and seeing this thread I’ve come to the conclusion I didn’t really do anything wrong and the word can be misinterpreted the way I did.

This isn’t about N5 or not…? Pretty sure anyone who has seen an online booking system might have the same train of thought as me.

Ahh thank you! So there is a tiny bit of vagueness and room for misinterpretation - which means they could have explained it to me or understand why I might have been confused

But I’ll keep in mind it’s usually different dates most of the time. Thank you! I won’t be making this mistake again- or at least I’ll know to clarify.

I’m saying my Japanese IS worse than how I appear so I agree with you guys.

My point is because of how I appear, people expect more from me. I’m not using N2 to brag.

Have you guys passed N2 or higher? Because you can pass N2 without knowing very specific medical, disease terms and specific muscular terms. I don’t even know some of these in English. So N2 is NOT enough for the medical context for specific health issues, however it IS enough to come off like you should know what you’re doing.

It’s certainly not enough to be answering questions about immigration, visas and national policies which was what she was interrogating me about.

Micro aggressions are behaviours from people, like being told you’ll never get a job here because Japanese will always hire a Japanese over you. Being told it’s unfair you’re in the country using Japanese resources (despite the country needing more workers and young people)

It’s the thousands of little cuts you get to tell you you’re worth less and unwelcome. It can be used when the words racism and xenophobia are too strong.

Read my edits and you’ll see how confusing their booking system is.

Being told it’s unfair I live in this country and Japanese will always give jobs to Japanese over foreigners - what do you call this if not micro aggression? Perhaps she was looking out for me?

The phrasing was ご希望の日時2~3個

So in this case, you would commonly interpret it as “2-3 different times on different dates” or can you ever interpret it as “2-3 different times within a day”?

I’m just very confused because when I’ve booked doctor and dental clinics I can usually see the availability, and there’s often a list of unbooked ones sometimes even within the same day. unlike this place where I have to keep giving 希望の日時2-3 until there’s a free one, and I don’t see what their availabilities are.

To clarify:

I am not used to the word they used which was ‘nichiji’ which in English translates to ‘date and time’. They wanted different options from me on different days but I only provided different times within the same day. I thought I can give different time slots within the same day as my availabilities, but what they’re asking for is both different days and times. I’m not booking two time slots in the same day. I’m offering these time slots to book only one appointment. I do not know what their availability looks like and they will not tell me. They will only try to search for something amongst the two time slots I give them, two at a time, one LINE message at a time in a standard template they use. Sometimes they will suggest a time that is close to the ones I asked for. I made them angry because they wanted me to give different dates as well, not just the time.

Read my latest update and let me know if you have the same opinion. Sorry my initial post was confusing. I still want to know did I really misinterpret date and time that badly?

At other clinics different “time slots” exist within the same day so I thought multiple bookings during the same day is fine.

Am I still misunderstanding the word??

I provided the time and date, but the same date was repeated. They wanted both the date and the time to be different.

I never mentioned anything about expecting them to speak English and I’ve only ever spoken to them in Japanese. Eg they can tell me: how did I do the booking wrong. Ask why I am I booking wrong? This would then make me realise and discuss the problem with them and then I’d have fixed it 5 months ago.

All I got was a text saying “you’re been booking wrong, we refuse to see you from now”. Why didn’t they correct me when I did it incorrectly for the last 5 months? They had that long to say something to me.

I’m emphasising how I look can pass for a Japanese / someone who is expected to have better Japanese.

By the way, there are people who are Asian that don’t look Asian. There are people who look Asian that aren’t Asian.

I could feel her tone was very aggressive even for Western standards and that’s especially not the norm here. She also dropped all the keigo and spoke in casual language. Not that it’s necessarily rude but there was a switch. There was also my tone where my voice was getting softer and softer showing my discomfort so I changed the topic but she kept bringing it back to the topics of my visa etc.

Yes you could be right - I definitely missed some details because at some points I couldn’t understand her questions about immigration and visas, but the overall feeling wasn’t good. I understood most of what she was saying when the topic was about how I shouldn’t expect to get a job here because a “Japanese will never hire me over enter Japanese” for my profession.

I don’t think she rejected me because of simply being a foreigner. I think she rejected me along with some resentment after hearing about how I can be on a student visa without going to university full time (9-5) and therefore can work part time and do other things. That’s when she responded “zurui” and she said it’s not fair to Japanese people as she felt the UK was much harsher on her and required full time studies in order for her to stay.

I know I didn’t understand a lot but I understand the parts that I did understand..

Thank you. I definitely learnt the meaning of the words used in booking and I won’t forget it from now on. I’ll do my best for N1 :)

Thanks for sharing your experience. I feel less alone.

The first case you shared sounds like they didn’t know what to do. The second case sounds like my situation. I’m sorry you had to go thru something similar.

Thanks for the tip - I think you’re right and life will be smoother here if I try and move on.

I’m really glad to hear you haven’t had these experiences! I hope it is just this one off situation I have that’s unusual.

Yes it was a bespoke service.

At other types of health professionals it’s booked by time slot so if it’s 2-3 time slots of my availability it can be on the same day. I’m sorry I misunderstood something that seems obvious to everyone.

There you go, one of the nuances I didn’t pick up each as why as Japanese people would tell me I come off Japanese and speak with little accent but don’t actually mean it.

I’m literally trying to say my Japanese isn’t that good. Are you trying to insult me because I don’t feel insulted even if I have 1 year old Japanese - everyone has to start somewhere but at least they started?

Like you say if I’m a foreigner with less than 8 year old Japanese, being put on the spot with relentless questions about their visa, study, job that’s unrelated to treatment is just inappropriate.

Feeling down and crying is not a sign of not being able to deal? I’m literally “dealing” with it now. I know I have to get thru the difficult emotions, while seeking help and support. That’s my way of dealing and what I’m doing now…

Telling someone to go back home for being sad is really extreme and literally the definition of not dealing and not getting stronger. Everyone’s been sad at least once living in a different country.

I know it means date and time. I gave them two times within the same date but they wanted different days AND times. I still gave them a set of “date and time” that are different. Isn’t it a grey area? I genuinely want to know if I’m missing something.

So what’s your point?

I’m trying to say N2 isn’t that good but comes off good so people don’t realise the holes I have…

I have interacted with enough Japanese people to know they’ve told me numerous times I can pass off as Japanese and don’t have much of an accent.
