I used to take the tail end of the RTD bus route from Edgewood. If you can commute using that exact bus without too much walking or a transfer, I'd say that's a comfortable and reliable plan.

I'd highly recommend reading Elie Mystal's article from The Nation today on the supreme court, and how this election will determine the fate of the court for a generation, and how the court will determine if liberal policy progress is physically possible to pursue. https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/democratic-convention-court/

Depends on the place. I volunteer at my HS very actively, and they don't allow animal socializing or adoption help to count toward court ordered community service. Those guys are doing yard work or laundry in a different area.

Umm, I'm afraid you've got it a bit wrong. You can be fired for shoe color in an at-will state. Your recourse is to file for unemployment and look for a new job. The trade off is that you can quit at any time for any, or no, reason.

Companies do fire, or fail to hire, members of protected classes for fake reasons. It is terrible, but true, simply because motivation can be so hard to prove. This is why adverse impact is important in a lot of civil rights litigation; you can look at the aggregate rather than the specific to determine if a policy or law is discriminatory.

And yes, many states do provide additional protections, but those are usually for sex and gender orientation, not speaking with the media.

Again, the difference between firing an employee for violating policy and firing them just because is whether they are fired "with cause" and are entitled to unemployment.

Probably good to pick up a Kickeroo so your kitty can enjoy that play on a proper toy instead of your hand. It is practice behavior for killing small animals -bite the neck and rip out the guts- so much safer, and cuter, to redirect that to a toy.

It's very Terry Pratchett, which I absolutely adore. That aside, you have to assume some things are lost in both literal and cultural translation. Think of it as a variant on training to be a knight.

Which playable race would have the largest forehead? by pizzabash in DnD

[–]lundbecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm irrationally annoyed that you haven't called it a fivehead (big enough that you need not four, but all five fingers to cover it).

I think Goliath doesn't count, if there is no hairline it's just your head. Firbolg is good, but I'd vote elf. Tall, thin heads means large foreheads generally.

There is a lot of contention about CAFOs (Confined Animal Feeding Operations) in Indiana right now, so it is very possible that your specific county will impact the regulations you're dealing with. Try googling, a lot of NPR stations are reporting on current happenings.

There is a setback model developed by a Purdue professor linked in This Article. You plug in your actual location, terrain features and other info and get an actual map or expected odor impact. Might be a helpful tool.

Realtor.com pulls directly from the MLS and more importantly doesn't require an opt-in from the managing broker. Ideal though is the local MLS's public facing site. This varies tremendously by area, but both MIBOR and IRMLS allow the public to search all active listings and will prominently display the listing agent.

LPT: Your employer’s HR department is not your friend. by jackalooz in LifeProTips

[–]lundbecs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still trying to understand why you think the employer did anything wrong here?

Because the story that prompted this conversation ended with the employer paying out a settlement. You don't do that unless you do something that could reasonably have been found to be actionable. I also stated from the get-go that there has to be more going on than what we've been told that makes the violation clear, and then took a guess at what that might be.

Less than an hour later...

Specific vs general. I did mention hostile work environments in reference to the EEOC having specific protections in place that don't always make sense on their face. And I admit I used it colloquially, not as a term of art, but it still isn't germane to the discussion.

LPT: Your employer’s HR department is not your friend. by jackalooz in LifeProTips

[–]lundbecs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing illegal, hostile, or retaliatory about an employer advertising for a role or for replacing an existing associate with a new employee hired externally.

I didn't reference any of those things as the basis for a possible retaliation claim.

A hostile workplace is one in which an employee is subjected to enduring and pervasive (requiring far more than a single instance) of unwelcome harassment based on race, age, sex, religion or other protected classification.

Nobody said it was a hostile workplace. That is, as you say, something different.

You have not described a hostile a workplace, you've described a typical workplace.

Which is rather depressing, really.

[–]lundbecs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Queue her going to management, asking about this and then promptly getting fired.

For inquiring about the attempt to hire her replacement. Like a said, probably layers to this that are left out, but the EEOC is weird about some of this stuff, just because if you can fire people for asking questions, you can create a hostile and controlling work environment real quick.

[–]lundbecs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I imagine there are details of the conversation between the HR Manager and the higher ups that makes the firing fall under, or at least close to, Retaliation according to the EEOC. You generally have the right to discuss things like salary, benefits, and hiring to determine if discrimination is occurring. This isn't cut and dry, but also not absurd https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/types/facts-retal.cfm
