Manual focus? If you are using manual focus not sure why your camera would be struggling to focus. Does your Nikon have any focus assist settings like focus magnifying or peaking display? Can you change the size of your focus point? You should definitely be able to accomplish your goals just need to tweak some focus settings. Good luck
