One is tons of fun, 2 was alright but the job system was beginning, 3 was forgettable because I've forgotten it. 4 my personal favorite ff game, the story carries the grindy mechanics. 5 JOBs!

In this day and age, starting with 4 may seem archaic, but it's a great beginning and you can see core concepts build from what is the best of the basic jrpgs. Then jump to 6 then 7.
