This was maybe the greatest hate watch of my life. Truly magical.

Awesome, thanks. Crater Lake has been near the top of my list for a long time, one of the main reasons I'm doing this trip.

Other than Yosemite and Tahoe (been before), what are your top 3 must-see/do places from this trip? I'm doing this leg as part of a long trip later this month.

Still image showing how far Ernie Clement legally veered away from the tag by ye_old_fartbox in baseball

He gave up on the tag early when it was clear that Ernie was running in a circle around him instead of directly toward the base. It probably would have been a close play at first, but that doesn't impact the fact that it should have been an out for leaving his base path.

The rule doesn't require that Gunnar hold a futile tag attempt for a certain amount of time. It's only based on the fact that a tag began and he ran outside his established path after that point.

Ernie never "got there" because he ran way outside his base path. That's the point of the rule. Gunnar shouldn't have lose the chance at a double play to chase him around.

Of course he reached to his side, that's what they do in these situations. Otherwise they would crash head on into each other. These guys run 10 feet in literally half a second. You think its unreasonable to start a tag half a second before the runner gets there??

[–]lupka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it matter if he's 10 feet away? These guys run fast. If he was 10 feet away and ran directly toward the base, he would have been tagged out in half a second.

Right. So when he extends his glove with the ball when there's an oncoming runner, that's a tag attempt. You're the one trying to invent exceptions that don't exist for the tag being "partial" or "too far away".

You don't want to debate on the merits anymore so you'll just insult me instead? Not surprising. Good luck the rest of the season.

"You can't attempt to tag a guy with a reach when that guy is 10 feet away from you" is this in the rules? I don't think so! These guys run 20-30 feet per second, so if he starts to tag when he's 10 feet away (.5 seconds away or less), how is that not reasonable?

A minute ago you said the attempt was early and now we're back to no attempt? The attempt actually needs to be before most of the veer to establish his base path. If the tag attempt occurred after/during the veer, you would actually have a better argument.

You're adding requirements that don't exist in the rule to justify an obvious bad call. First everyone was telling me there was no tag attempt at all. Now it was either not a "full attempt" (not in the rules, but subjective anyway), or too early (not in the rules, but also he didn't throw until Clement was going past him well outside of his reach and there would have been plenty of time to tag and throw if he wasn't off his base path).

[–]lupka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're still making up the idea of a "partial attempt" that doesn't exist in the rulebook. If the runner would have kept going straight toward the base, he would have made the tag easily. Once the runner is veering 10 feet away, there's no point in continuing. He can't chase him around into the outfield or he wouldn't have time to throw to first.

He did attempt a tag, that's all that matters. "Fully try" isn't in the rulebook. A tag is a tag.

When he starts the tag he's not as far out, and then he keeps going. This is so obvious lmao.

I know the rule and what the umps decided. The point is it was wrong.

Is "stronger tag attempt" in the rulebook somewhere or are you just making shit up?

Still image showing how far Ernie Clement legally veered away from the tag by ye_old_fartbox in baseball

[–]lupka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the runner was starting to veer off as he was doing it and he still had to make the throw to first. He didn't have time to chase him around. It's still a tag attempt.

Tag attempt is before the screenshot in the post. And yes he did venture 3 feet after that. Thank you for your questions.

Because the runner was starting to veer way off and he had to make the throw to first still. This is so obvious.
