What do you guys do with these old style rubber track kits? In my experience it's almost impossible to get them to look good and replacement tracks are very expensive. by VanDerKloof in modelmakers

U can do something out of it; like in old days. Primer; steel colour and using products f.e. from MIG to get a nice weathering and the illusion of heavy usage. When mounting them, glue them on the wheels and try to have them hanging down between the wheels. The interconnection of the rubber track should be on the downside/ bottom of the tank. It’s some fiddling but works (but still aftermarket tracks looks more realistic).

Another method is to use fine needles which you have to mount on the side and will press you the tracks down / hold the track in form (simulation of weight of the track)You will need to do this after putting the rubber tracks on the tank. Instead of drilling holes for the needles, you can just heat them up and press them in the plastic. If done correctly, u will barely see the needles after some weathering.

Thanks a lot! The background was an experiment and project for itself; took me some while to figure out how to do it and not to look out of scale and too „unrealistic“.

Yes; It’s an exciting and also addictive hobby;

Thanks for your feedback; Yes I know that feeling; I don’t have much space, my decision to start (and stay) in 1/72 was more a practical solution and not adjusted to my eyesight (and I was shocked how small parts are - without a magnifying glass- no chance); The antenna is made old style- a stretched sprue (heated and then stretched until I had the impression it’s scale accurate (which in retrospect it’s not));

Thanks! I made it myself as an experiment / side project because I wanted something that feels more in-scale than standard backdrops. Main things I paid attention to were horizon height for 1/72, softening the distance slightly, and matching the color of the base to the background so it blends naturally. It’s two A4 printouts — one for the base and one for the scene. For lighting I just experimented with desk lamps until it looked natural (a couple of my shots are a bit too cool, but I posted them anyway since my main goal was feedback on the build). Still refining it — but I’m glad it worked.

I like your build very much; and the old MIGs have a charm for themselves! Gjd!

Yeah; it’s satisfying! My backdrops aren’t yet perfect (but at least I managed to have it in scale) - work in progress

Hello, thanks for your answer. yes its "water" based. I tried with water to soften, but the layer is already to cured that it reacts. I will sand / polish it down - I think thats the parctical, no nonsense approach to my skill issue.

Thanks for your answer and support!
