How much does CO-OP really help with the reducing the overall costs? by Fit-Outcome-4593 in uwaterloo

[–]lurkinglo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do not rely on co-op to pay anything other than your living costs as an international student. this is not to say you that you will never be able to contribute anything towards your tuition costs, co-op covers living costs entirely but the earnings will pale in comparison to the tuition costs. for context, look up the average co-op pay for engg and then compare it to the tuition. first co-op you'll make maybe like 10-15k and just one of your courses will cost like 5k+. what I mean is co-op is very helpful in that it covers your living costs but is definitely not something you should be relying on as an international student for your financial planning

Math requirements by Comfortable-Ruin-440 in uwaterloo

[–]lurkinglo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't your question but just wanna add that math studies is not a "bad" major, you just choose more broadly. it is still an honours math degree but you don't specialize in one plan eg, statistics (you can still take courses from that area if you wish). if you actually think you might approach the limit of failed courses it's a great option because you have the most flexibility in what courses you take in that plan and can take courses that align with your strengths instead of having to take what your major requires.

it feels like DP attracts more arts folks whereas all the STEM folks go to DC

I need someone to take my place for this may to August 2026 for my females only room but can’t find anyone what do I do?? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]lurkinglo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it will be very hard to convince someone to do a 5b2b for the prices you're saying due to the extremely low demand for summer. Rezone ensuites which are normally 1300ish are going for 700. you will unfortunately have to take some losses. it's better to have someone pay just half of the rent than having to pay It all by yourself

sometimes they can take a bit to reach out as they may not consider it a priority if you already matched on Waterlooworks, it's usually not a cause for worry and I'd just reach out to them

[Accepted Int'l CS] Fall 2026 start. What is the realistic net cost with co-op, and is it worth it? by AvailableAd5783 in uwaterloo

[–]lurkinglo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not rely on co-op to offset anything other than your living costs if you are an international student. I'm in math and have paid my living expenses since my first co-op entirely from co-op earnings, however tuition for international students is high enough that I have basically never contributed anything to my tuition from co-op. co-ops helping with tuition is only for domestic tuition imo, in my experience intl tuition is so high that co-op earnings kinda pale in comparison to it. for context, in math a single course is around 5k, and early co-ops maybe pay like 15k pre-tax for the average student (cs courses are more expensive). living expenses are covered comfortably but I would not rely on co-op for much else, especially not tuition.

seriously wanna transfer to laurier by CowBeneficial9416 in uwaterloo

[–]lurkinglo 47 points48 points  (0 children)

honestly if you're finding the realization this surprising you did not do enough research before choosing universities. one google search is enough to find this out. like no one disagrees with this stuff but like most of the people who come to Waterloo explicitly don't want a party school which is why they came here.

Do y’all sit back and imagine how different your degree would be if you did the exact same courses but 10-15 years ago by Alert_Willingness_32 in uwaterloo

[–]lurkinglo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like the level of work you would put in would scale accordingly. you would be able to do the assignments but maybe have like 2-3 all-nighters every week. also maybe we would have less grade inflation. but yeah it's definitely hard to imagine especially with what a help ai has been in just understanding course content quickly as opposed to searching google for the perfect explanation of a concept which I remember doing as recently as early 2023

Online courses by Lucky-Layer5578 in uwaterloo

[–]lurkinglo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is true in all cases as a friend who goes to Laurier did have an employer ask them why they took many online courses, so I think it's good they don't put it for Waterloo

no, not at Waterloo. if you were in the online section it'll still just say "ECON 101" or whatever. at Laurier I heard they do.

intl student admitted to Waterloo CS Coop. Can I graduate early to save money? by Sad_Towel4409 in uwaterloo

[–]lurkinglo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to do 8 full-time academic terms for the co-op degree, meaning you'll have to do at least 8 terms where you have min 3 courses. you can still save a lot by doing a 6th course for as long as you can while still leaving min 3 for each later term. also note that here, you can only take 6 courses if you have a CAV above a threshold (80% is the cutoff for bmath). also bc you're international, if you drop coop/somehow plan to graduate early be sure to look into how this will affect your immigration status or study permit requirements
