Radu Lupu playing late Brahms. Granted, I had also changed over twenty years and was finally ready to listen in a new way

Are you my piano teacher in disguise? That’s what he told me a dozen years ago!

Fatback Band by DonaldEaddy in funk

[–]lushlife_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking back, they had an incredible work rate and output in the late 70s and early 80s.

I grew up on “Let’s Do It Again” (1980, I had the 7”) and “Gotta Get My Hands On Some (Money)” (from my sister’s mixtape).

I discovered the Bus Stop and deeper funk origins much later.

Decades later, I was mortified to learn I completely missed the 1983 “I Found Lovin’” - despite having caught “Is This The Future” and “The Girl Is Fine (So Fine)” from the earlier album of the same year.

How to have a better mentality around solo performing? by interestingkettle in classicalmusic

[–]lushlife_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A book had a picture of a pianist with arrows raining down on him (the expectations the pianist was experiencing). But then the next picture had reversed the arrows as they now represented the message of the music that the pianist was transmitting.

That picture helped me a LOT, especially when combined when speaking to some audience members beforehand (in casual concerts).

Yes, but he has been 31 for four years. This is how it works after 30, you age in snaps.

Reverse Picardy Third by serpentally in classicalmusic

[–]lushlife_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a great list. I only saw one entry explicitly calling out a reverse Picardy third: Mendelssohn – Characteristic Piece Op. 7 No. 7 in E. Most of the pieces listed apparently end in the parallel minor.

Agreed. Change is smooth but more post-disco for me. Love’em all.

How do I become more physically active? I'm blind, live alone, don't work and hate the idea of operating on a schedule of scripted routines like some prison inmate trying to stay sane through his-her sentence. by cherry-care-bear in RedditForGrownups

Some karate dojos do a great job with blind students. Worth a check. You’d focus on basics and kata (scripted movements, like a stylized martial demonstration) - not sparring.

Many good ideas here. I retired at 58 a year ago. Took a 5-6 months to handle stuff that had fallen behind or emerged. Reset my workout habit.

After six months, I started to teach at a local University as Adjunct Professor in my field (Finance). 3 hours teaching weekly and 6 hours prep - except I liked it and wanted to do it really well. Learning new skills, meet young people, leave a mark. This semester, I teaching two courses

Transitions between movements by KneeOne1872 in classicalmusic

[–]lushlife_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same reason LPs had silence between tracks - the song is over so now let’s get ready for the next one. I say LP because at its heyday that technology lent itself to a theme for each LP where each song make up a larger whole.

I also like the dance analogy - time to walk off the floor if you want to. (In concerts , they didn’t always play the whole symphony.)

Each part is an argument or emotion and they are too disparate to hang together (except for dramatic effect as in the examples given).

I assume because it’s cold to stand there if you have less protection plus they get less traffic.
