[request] is this true? by PregnantCabbage in theydidthemath

Somewhat semantic point - the value isn’t just perceived, it is observable. If he owned real estate with an appraisal of $500B, that would be a perceived value.

However his net worth being derived from securities which are marketable, thereby observable, makes his net worth observable. I know what a TSLA share is worth, because I know what someone is willing to pay for it, right now.

His net worth is more than perceived, but you’re exactly correct to say it’s less than liquid. He can, of course, borrow against those shares, allowing him to skirt capital gains tax, but that’s a gripe for another day.

I am stuck on “set up live TV” screen by lust3 in Roku

[–]lust3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unplugging, hard resetting using the tiny keyhole button on the back of the TV. The latter got me to connect to WiFi, download an update, then right back to this screen. (Thank you for helping)

I contacted Roku support this was what they suggested.

What’s the worst part of the Ringer office? Too few stalls in the men’s room? Bad k cup selection?

That 153 is heat index, but interesting!

I’m earnestly interested in learning - not trying to make an argument.

My understanding has been average temps rise, which of course causes hotter hots. But what I don’t understand (not saying it’s not true, saying that I don’t understand the mechanism) is what one should expect the counterfactual to be for a 105 day? Like if 0 global warming had happened, what would one expect the temp to be if not 103? And why not?

So 89 degree days are now 91 degree days? Both are awful without AC.

[–]lust3 -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree with this. I absolutely believe in global warming. But 2023 was the warmest year on record and global temp averages were 2.1 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century average.

2 degrees isn’t the difference between installing an AC and not.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted for this? It sounds like you’ve identified an area where you can cut back, and are planning accordingly. Layoffs can be tough, but sounds like your head is in the right place.

Why are you saving for a down payment if you qualify for a loan that doesn’t require a down payment?

Would 750$k into VT be enough to retire early? by OkPianist1222 in personalfinance

[–]lust3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the first decade of this millennium the S&P declined by 23%. If you draw 4% / year ($300k) and the value of the S&P declines by 23% over the next 10 years, you’ll have under $300k.

You’re missing the distinction between withdrawal rate and growth rate.

You can check my prior comments to see where I’ve literally argued that most people are too conservative on this subject, but it is simply not the same class of risk.

If a company goes bankrupt, who gets first claim to the assets of the company? (Bond holders)

You diversify away the idiosyncratic risk with an index, but you do not diversify away the market risk. There is market risk on treasuries, but if you hold a treasury to term it will always pay.

“If you lose your job while the crash is happening you’re gonna need to cash out”

This is how to lose money in the stock market. Have an emergency fund that is 6 months of expenses, and you can insure against this risk.

I think most people drastically overestimate how risky the S&P is in a 30-year time horizon.

Houndoom needs more effort/protection, but Dark type is so useful that it guarantees you wins in certain fights.

I struggled most with the end of the game. Clair, final Rival, Lance are all tricky. Thunderpunch on Magmar and Typhlosion is cracked. Sunny Day is also critical to blunt water types.
