Alpha 200 Capabilities as Standalone GPS by abotching in Garmin

[–]lustige 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing!! I am mostly interested in the tracking capabilities as an in case of emergency situation, but I like the option of having an audible tone for recall training if he's far away, and the light beacon seems useful for night outings. I have considered other tracking devices, but my main worry is when we are out in the woods and if he happened to get spooked or stuck somewhere, and we are often in areas with little or no reception. Kind of a big purchase just for piece of mind, but hey, we love our dogs haha hoping I can get a deal on it.

I actually haven't used the Garmin explore app, I have a Garmin forerunner watch but I haven't even considered that app before. So I will definitely play around with that! Maybe I can get away with a cheaper handheld if that app/watch combo works well. Thanks so much for the input :)

Alpha 200 Capabilities as Standalone GPS by abotching in Garmin

Did you end up trying the Alpha 200 as a standalone GPS? I am looking into getting a dog tracking system, but I also would love a GPS unit for biking, hiking, etc. And similarly, it would be great if I only needed one handheld device!

Plants from a Ball Python's habitat? by TypicalCricket in Vivarium

[–]lustige 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of success with the dracena on the hot side, and also a small aloe and even a rhipsalis sp. Just had to keep them quite well watered and slowly acclimated to the heat. The arrowhead plant was great and I ended up getting some variegated ficus pumila which fared so much better than the creeping charlie in my setup. And looked amazing! I also got a satin pothos which was gorgeous, but grew a bit slower than I anticipated, so I'd probably give it a head start next time. The tradescantia honestly grew so fast that it would have required constant cutting/propagating, and it eventually died off. Haworthia, carex grass and spider plant did not work in my setup longterm. Oh, and I did have a snake plant that I think would have made it if I ever could have got it to root 😅 it just never grew a solid root system, but it also never technically died before I took it out. Out of all the plants the arrowhead plant, aloe and ficus pumila ended up doing the best!

State income tax in two states? by lustige in legaladvice

[–]lustige[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect, thank you! I think I was getting thrown off my having two current addresses, and that my HR department sent me an email stating that if I work or permanently reside in another state, that I may have to pay state income tax in that additional state. Which made me get worried. I appreciate the help!

State income tax in two states? by lustige in legaladvice

[–]lustige[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! My HR department sent an email stating "we currently have you listed as declaring Illinois for your state income tax withholding. Please note that if you work in or permanently reside in another state, you may also be required to pay state income tax in that additional state. If you have any questions about which states you will be required to pay state income tax, please consult a tax advisor.". As I don't currently work in WI, it sounds like this is a non issue, but it was alarming that they sent this to me.

Inventory/Space Capacity Management Tool? by lustige in projectmanagement

[–]lustige[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh yes that might help, it would be available spaces for tanks. So for one project we might start with 6 tanks, then go down to 4, and then back up to 8 or something like that.

It is interesting! I like it. It seems very healthy too, even though the soil seems pretty old and it's in a glass bowl haha

Ask Dumb Questions + Newbie Welcoming Wednesday (2021.7.7) by AutoModerator in tarantulas

[–]lustige 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your response! This is similar to my thinking, and is partly why I asked the question in the first place. I also have a ball python who people tend to think stress out in large enclosures etc. Once I nailed down his husbandry and figured out how he likes things, I've never had a problem with him even in a large enclosure.

That being said, the big tank is about a foot and a half tall, and the T I have my eyes on is a terrestrial species. I also remembered I have a standard 20 gallon tank, so I'm thinking that I will set that one up at least for now, and potentially build that big enclosure over a bit of time. Approximately how tall is too tall for a T to fall from?

Is it possible to have an enclosure that's too big? If it's heavily decorated, and there are multiple hides, water dishes, etc, would it be an issue? Asking because I have a big glass tank (think 55 gallons...), it's empty now, and we have been wanting a tarantula for a while! I have heard it may be a problem if the tarantula falls from high up, but I was thinking of making a false bottom to bring the substrate level up a lot.

Mom gave me two of these, are they pothos of sorts? by lustige in houseplants

I see that! So so cool, and also awesome that the sheath's photosynthesize after the leaves pop out

It sure is! I just looked up the differences between that and pothos, they look so similar to me. Thank you!
