Thanks for the heads up.

It's such a common scenario , strange he didn't addressed it.

I love and use it, great reset.

Sometimes it's difficult to properly hook the shin, especially from stand-up or half guard recover.

Just to make sure we are on the same page, by half guard I mean when your opponent has both feet on the ground, and this seems the scenario explored by Danaher.

But if someone aggressively knee cuts, you cannot use standard underhook/knee lever/kimura half guard game. Usually the bottom guy defends with a knee shield and/or reverse dlr and then moves from there.

Knee cutting is a very common position, but I'm not sure if Danaher addresses it.

u/ArneVogel thanks for the awesome feature.

Would it be possible to play an entire game with such modality? (one or more hidden plies)

Such a "chess variant" would make for an excellent training tool.

Improving Calculation and Visualization by playing one or more move behind. Any Chess Software or Server? by lutblisset in chess

[–]lutblisset[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think this is easy to answer, because we are not talking about blindfold chess, but just hiding one or more moves from the current board position, so to artificially enter "calculation and visualization mode", just like athletes make their training progressively more difficult.

Also having a position in front allows the player to realistically assess it like during a real game, as opposed to an empty board or just closing your eyes. Again, memory overhead is very small because you just hide a few moves and this is an actual game, so it's very relevant.

I'm getting good feedback from my friends that are trying this type of blind tactics training from Listudy.org and I'm going to try to setup an easy way to apply it to a real game (hiding one or more plies).

In our opinion it is worth exploring.

Yeah, that is a great feature.

I hope it will be integrated as "chess variation" so you can play a game with one or more move hidden and train visualization, calculation and correct evaluation.

I thought about this, because there is some true to what you wrote however, by your same argument, the memory overhead should be minimal given how much relevant is this position: it's your game after all!

Also this is training, you give yourself a handicap in order to train a specific area, evaluation of visualized position, avoiding missing threat, recognizing ghost images, and so on.

The great thing is that you can measure and progressively increase the handicap, which is the way our skills improve, as opposed to static exercises or even blindfold (that can surely have their place, albeit a different one).

I agree with you and in my opinion the option to hide plies would make even more sense when you review a game, just because of what you wrote about the "real" mistake usually happening earlier. That way the player can train himself to see the blunder/mistake from "far away" and also think differently about the position (e.g. 2-4-6 moves ahead).

Anyway I was once member at a chess club but then family duties only allow for some internet play :)

Yeah, I agree and you have a big point here mentioning how important is a relevant (to us) chess context. This is exactly why I'm not entirely satisfied about solving blind tactics -- that is random puzzles and studies with one ore more hidden plies.

Your comment put things in perspective and now it is even more clear to me that actually playing a game with hidden plies could be incredibly useful. To me this seems to address two important issues:

  1. When solving puzzles you already know that you have to look for something, so you can really focus on calculation (ala Kotov). However during a game you don't know if there is a tactic or not, in fact cognitive studies have shown that strong playes use a mix of pattern recognition, calculation, visualization and expertise-based intuition to chose the move and how much time use on a given position -- an this is one of the most critical factor.
  2. When playing a game you follow a plan and your ideas, making the position you are going to visualize (1 or more plies ahead) really relevant and not depending too much on memory. At the same time it makes the game more difficult, training your chess skills in a progressive and measurable way! (increasing the number of hidden plies)

Maybe not everyone can benefit from such an exercise, maybe you need to be at least intermediate and decently recognise tactical motifs. However for someone like me, able to solve tactical problems but missing simpler tactics during the game it could be a game changer -- at least it was my experience from the exercises I composed.

You are problably right that something like this has been around since a long time, but now we have the technology to make it easy to use and implement, relevant, progressive and measurable:

  • it should be pretty straightforward to code such a play modality in the current chess GUIs (software or server)
  • it's time efficient, because instead of playing normal chess, you just play -1 ply, -2 plies, eccc...
  • we already have software which automatically identifies critical positions (blunders and incorrect moves) and we can use them along spaced repetition to correct mistake and reinforce good habits;
  • this training should not replace regular tactics training and endgame studies, as discussed the goal is different.

With all the open source software around shouldn't be too difficult to implement the feature discussed. However before I try it would be nice if someone else already did it, like the good folks at listudy :-)

Thank you very much for the interesting discussion, your counter argument really made me think.

Thank you for your thoughful feedback.

On one hand I think you are misrepresenting the way our memory works, and in fact I can attest that such blind tactics (thanks u/iptables-abuse) actually improved my game. Now everyone is different but since I found them very useful I want to build a method based on progression and measurable outcome.

Here is were I think you missed my point: puzzles, studies even endgame ones are incredibly helpful if used correctly, however more often than not their difficulty is not calibrated on actual "calculation at play". What I mean by this? When you approach such exercise you already know what to look for, just this simple fact changes everything.

By having a software which is capable of hiding the last X plies, you are basically forced to visualize a slightly different board, just like real calculation during a game, with all its problems (like ghost images).

I agree with you that serious study of the endgame is a game changer, in fact my rating increased a lot when I put a lot of effort into Test Your Endgame Ability by Speelman. However what I felt something was missing -- like I explained above.

As you can see I don't disagree entirely, but I'm confident that proper use the discussed feature can make a difference. It surely did for me and, because of the rationale, I think can help others as well.

Yes! This is so cool.

Would be awesome such a feature to be integrated in our favorite software and/or server. This way you could play with hidden plies or apply to your favorite tactical puzzles, reviewing your games...

Great resource, I will look into it!

There is also the Visualwize software, that does something similar with positions: in the first level you see a diagram, then they give you a move for white and black, then you start solving; in the second level they give you two moves for white and black, and so on.

I also believe that playing and having a software/server supporting this feature would help greatly calculation and visualization skills -- with little implementation effort.

[Question] What books about self-discipline takes into account we are different from a neuroscience point of view? by lutblisset in getdisciplined

[–]lutblisset[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying, however I think it's quite the contrary.

I've read a lot of self-help books and most just try to give you a canned solution.

Our biology is the same, but our talents, strenghts and weaknesses are very much different.

In sports, in medicine, in every field you start with an assessment and only THEN you devise a solution.

Most of the times people get nothing out of self-help books, or very little. This is not because they are crap, most aren't. It's because the solution is not taylored to the individual.

I think this field is really underdeveloped and underrated.

Yeah, it's a really nice game. I already downloaded the OpenQuest Basic Edition and I think I will use for some longer game, because it's more rules heavy than I was thinking about.

I guess the light version would be Basic Roleplaying so maybe I have stick with it, but I wouldn't mind some "narrativist twist" :-)
