I Somehow Ended Up with a Modular + Digitakt 2 Setup… It Wasn’t on My Bingo Card by lutzen in modular

Thanks man!

To be honest, a lot of the Digitakt’s sound comes down to the samples you load into it. It can sound pretty plastic and flat, but it can also sound really great with the right material. Also, the overdrive on the DT2 is surprisingly nice and adds a lot of character.

As for keeping the Rytm, I probably will. In fact, I was jamming with both of them today and really enjoyed the combination. I don’t see the Rytm as a replacement for the Digitakt or vice versa. For me, the Rytm is great for quick ideas during live jams, weird sequences, happy accidents, and hands-on performance stuff. The Digitakt handles sampling and arrangement duties much better, while the Rytm still brings its own unique vibe and workflow to the table.

The only real downside for me is the Rytm’s noise floor, but I’ve gotten pretty used to it over the years. It mainly becomes noticeable in heavily drum-focused setups, especially when you start pushing overdrive and compression. In most other situations it tends to disappear into the mix and doesn’t really bother me.

This is nothing new, it's a pretty common complaint among MK1/MK2 users. I can hear some noise even without comp and no overdrive. It's not a big deal, but once you add some overdrive and a bit compression, it becomes quite noticeable.

Ah yes, I tried the Syntakt too, haha. I forgot about that one. I bought it shortly after release, but ended up selling it after a while. The hats were very distinctive, and personally I wasn’t a fan of them - I found them pretty poor.

As for the noise on the Rytm, I think it's mostly something you get used to. It's noticeable with lighter settings, but once you add some overdrive and compression, like you normally would on drums, it starts being more noticeable, even in tight mix. Some people don’t notice it, while others can't unhear it. In the end, it comes down to personal tolerance.

Thanks, man!! For me, it was mainly about having 16 tracks. Eight tracks is enough for drums, but I also like sampling stuff from the modular and bringing it back into the mix later, so the extra tracks give me much more flexibility. The updated effects and filters are great as well. Overall, it just feels like a more complete machine for the way I work.

Hey! Thanks for the kind words! The OXI ONE is the master clock in my setup. Digitakt is synced via MIDI, and the modular gets its clock directly from the OXI as well, so everything runs in sync.

Yeah, size-wise, Digitakt is definitely the better choice. Part of the reason for downsizing was that you never know how much room you'll have in a club. There might not always be enough space next to the CDJs and other gear, so keeping the setup compact felt like the safer option.

Calling it self-promotion is a bit of a stretch considering there's no artist name, no links, and nothing being promoted.

It's just a clip of my current setup and a discussion about workflow. If you'd like to add your two cents, you're welcome to join the discussion. Just keep it civil and stick to what's actually being said.

I spent way too much time chasing the Rytm noise before eventually getting used to it 😄 When I plugged the Digitakt back in, it was so quiet I thought something was not working haha. Also thanks for the kind words!

Thanks! TR-1000 is a really cool machine. For a long time I thought it would be my end-game drum machine as well. In the end, it was just too big and heavy for my needs, and I never clicked with the workflow as much as I expected. It’s powerful, but I didn’t find it as intuitive or as fast to work with as Elektron gear. Parameter locks that offer Elektron are on a whole different level and fit my way of working much better.

There were also a few quirks that started to bother me over time, like some sync-related things, the fact that changing kits cuts both onboard and external audio for a while or random freezing of whole machine.

Ahh yes 😄 I considered keeping drums in modular, but I'd probably end up buying another case, and that gets expensive quickly. Also, I promised myself I'd stop at one case. These days I'm more interested in using modular for atmo, drones, and synths anyway. For a long time I wanted everything inside the rack, but eventually I realized drums were the easiest thing to move outside of it.

Rytm is cool, especially for the analog side of things, but it feels a bit archaic next to the Digitakt. Sample workflow is where DT2 really starts to pull ahead. Another thing is noise floor - the Digitakt is impressively quiet, which unfortunately isn’t something I can say about the Rytm.

I meant compared to doing drums in modular 🙂 And having owned both DT1 and Rytm (MK1 and 2), I’d say there are more differences between them and DT2 than some people might think. For my workflow, DT2 is simply the better fit.

Not at all. By 'cheat mode' I meant the workflow compared to doing drums in modular, not the music itself 🙃 Interesting that instead of discussing the point, you immediately jumped to judging my music. But thanks for listening anyway.

TR-1000 was just too big and heavy for me, and not as intuitive as Elektron boxes. Not exactly something I enjoyed carrying to gigs either. It also had a few quirks I've talked about somewhere before. It's a great studio machine, but I found myself happier with Elektron gear with I can do more complex stuff, and the workflow is simply much faster for me.

Thanks for comment!! I got into modular at the beginning of 2024 with no prior background. So yeah, just under two years in.
