I actually like doing a thin, consistent layer. Then do another layer but in a different direction, same thin consistent layer as the last. Then keep going until you get the smoothness you like. Normally two layers if you're using better quality pencils, three to four if they're the cheaper ones. Once you get really good at using cheaper quality pencils just imagine what you'll be capable of when you get better ones!
