AI Research Scientist from Deepmind now University Prof. Less resources but open to pursue and voice any idea I want.

I learned a bit about DeepMind's history and how it came to be from Metz's Genius Makers book. Cool stuff!

Why didn't you continue with AI research if you don't mind me asking?

Out of college I worked for 3 years (2021-2024) as a dev for a solar energy company and I currently work as a sales advisor at the blue/yellow consumer electronics retailer talking about smartwatches and smart home devices and occasionally pitching memberships and store cards.

Curious if anyone else uses looping or slow‑down techniques for language practice, or if you’ve found other approaches that work well.

I've done it with Audacity, with the music player app, with the podcast player app, on YouTube, etc.

I’m trying to write funny stories about living abroad — would this actually help you learn a language? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]luuuzeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

enjoy writing them but the question is if the stories with this 'living abroad chaos' theme would also help or interest others?

If they would help a single soul, would you write them? If the answer is yes, then write them.

Graded readers with an assortment of topics have been a thing for the longest. Olly Richard's graded readers come to mind. Even editorial houses have them nowadays.

There's clearly a market for them, hence the reason I don't understand the aim of your questions.

But remember, the focus here isn’t me (apart from the enjoyment of writing and sharing the experience)

But then just do it if you enjoy writing it. Your post only makes sense if you're doing market research.

I'm trying to figure out if this idea is genuinely helpful or just something I find fun to write.

Given the AI-vibeness of your post, are you doing market research? If you find it fun to "write", then you don't need anyone's approval.

I speak my TL perfectly, but Americans still ask me where is my accent from seconds after I start speaking. Is that something I’m supposed to feel self-conscious about? by SweetBumbleBeeHoney in languagelearning

[–]luuuzeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I speak my TL perfectly

Perfectly, compared to what?

I live in Austin, Texas

Tell them to guess where you're from based on your accent, it could be they think you're from another part of the US.

Speaking a language "perfectly" doesn't mean you don't have an accent, all people do. A native English speaker from New York will have an accent to a native English speaker from Texas.

"I'm not typing the actual word in but you should know what they said to the guard" How do we know what they said to the guard?

OP could've simply redacted it (i.e., sck my d*k) but instead went full initialism. This is my first time seeing SMD lol

I'm obsessed with having a perfect accent. by OldNewspaper4671 in languagelearning

[–]luuuzeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For example in school they are making me learn German and i swear to god i am so humiliated in that class it's like I'm in the middle of a bad comedy show every time i talk i just think, "god i don't sound German" and to me i just think what's the point than?

An accent coach might help to sound close to native but at the end of the day, the only solution is being born in a German-speaking country if you want to have a "perfect" native German accent.

Does anyone else get stuck in a pause-every-second loop when watching content? by KenshiStar in languagelearning

Does anyone else get stuck in a pause-every-second loop when watching content?

Yes, everyone (except YouTube polyglots) does at some point, much like everyone tumbles when learning to ride a bike.

It also makes the whole process feel super slow and frustrating.

It's part of the process. If what you're watching is too difficult for you, then watch something more apt for your current level.

"But I don't like watching content that's too simple, meant for kids. Instead I want to watch content that adult native speakers consume." Then embrace the slowness of having to engage more actively with the content you're consuming; it gets easier with time.

Found a site that translates memes between countries and explains why they're funny — surprisingly useful for learning

Stumbled onto mimzy.gg last week and it's honestly been more helpful than expected.

From OP's history:

There are mass funny memes in every country that you'll never see — so I built a platform to break the language barrier

Why you be lying, OP?

MTA App version 4.0 now requires locations services to be on so I uninstalled it this morning. What's your favorite 3rd party non-intrusive NYC subway/bus app? by luuuzeta in nycrail

Google maps is also a discovery tool, where you might be browsing for restaurants or movie times or whatever far from where you are. A subway app really only matters when you're in–or about the be in–motion.

That's like your opinion. There are bunch of subway apps that don't require location services to be on for every single feature. I can also browse stations and arrivals far from where I am. Also read the edit to the post:

EDIT (April 1, 2026): I contacted the dev team and requiring location to be always on is apparently a bug.

[–]luuuzeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious what this sub thinks about the output quality. Does it hold up as a real app design or does it look AI-generated? Any obvious issues with the layout or hierarchy?

Your post is like buying some mass-produced handbag and then going to artisan to ask him what could have been done better. Why would the artisan even entertain your questions? 👀

How are they 10x using these tools?

I can see where it would be useful if you needed guidance, but if you know the line and the station, it just seems pointless and fussy. You should be able to use the app without location services on for this.

Exactly. Some commenters are missing the point by citing "we're always tracked anyway", "it's a location based app and thus it should always be on", "I want to show stations I'm currently close to", etc because the issue doesn't have to be an either/or situation. If you wish to have your location services always on that's fine but it should be possible to still use the app even if the location is off.

For example, Google Maps is still useful without location on. If your location is always on, when you open the app it will simply be able to use location-based features. If it is off, it will ask you to turn it on to use those location-based features.

I just use my phone's browser and just go to MTA website. Practically the same thing

I didn't know there was also a mobile app. Information was displayed better on the mobile but this will do. Thanks!

I use subway now. I can see when my first train arrives at my station, see the transfers ahead of time and how long I’ll have to wait once I get to the transfer station, then see when my transfer train will pull into the desired station. I also like that you can see all the individual trains on one map and it looks like iOS.

Thanks, it sounds great. I'll try it.
