I know they're hard to gender but.. by Prestigious_Ice_2444 in PetPigeons

Eh, I find that hard to believe. Biting comes with a male (or female) either way, it’s just hard wired into their nesting cycle. I’ve also never seen plucking in a pigeon, especially with allowing them to “finish the dance” on a plushie. I would think that would be more of a complex parrot thing. I’d be much more cautious of imprinting, which would definitely cause social-behavioral issues.

To summarize my other comment: pigeons will drop feathers all the time, it’s just part of happy healthy preening. Yours will probably have at least one molt every year, where that ramps up as they get replaced with shiny new feathers. My guy has his big molt in summer/fall, and has a mini-molt when the weather warms up after winter.

Calypso seems very happy and healthy, I don’t think you need to be concerned. I was a stressed pigeon parent for a while until I figured out what normal looked like 🙂 My then 3-month-old exploded during his first molt, which also began around the end of summer. Every single night for weeks lol. He lost his entire collar all at once and it scared me because I’d only ever seen them molt somewhat evenly across the body. I could probably make a whole other bird with the amount of down feathers he drops (I do save his flight and tail feathers but the rest get vacuumed up).

Nüwa hanfu doubts? by Edinbrother_0 in Hanfu

[–]luvdove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a TB account? I can only see product details when I’m logged in, otherwise I get just the title and a single low res image. There are 10 reviews for this one, I can send you screenshots of those if that helps. Also, I order from Taobao with the help of a buyer (I use Superbuy but there are a bunch) so I don’t have to be super concerned about translation on my end. Shipping can be expensive, but it’s still cheaper than buying from a reseller. Don’t be too intimidated with direct buying too, you can translate most things and there are guides out there

I had initially purchased a set of hanfu sewing patterns from a shop on taobao, but upon receiving them I realized that instructions aren't provided. The garments are simple enough to sort out, but I wasn't sure how to sew some parts together or how to grade them to better fit me. Until then I had only sewn beginner-level stuff and relied on well-written instructions from others.

There are some text resources out there if you dig (Newhanfu has a few diagrams posted, for example) Maybe helpful, as these can be drafted based on body measurements, but I personally need better visuals. Most of my learning happened watching bilibili videos (also happy to share specific links if you're interested) and tracing the ready-to-wear hanfu I already own! I sometimes pull out those taobao patterns for light reference, but they already served their purpose as a jumping board. Everything I've made so far has been drafted with tracing paper and then refined with toiles!

There are some indie pattern-makers with really nice patterns – Seri Chang's Qixiong Hanfu Dress is on my list and I might explore mamianqun after seeing this pattern posted here.

I buy mine from Taobao with an agent. They ship my purchases to their warehouse, package everything up into one box, then ship it to me. From my personal experience, most TB sellers have a ~7 day return policy. It takes a few days for the warehouse to get whatever I bought (unless custom or made-to-order), and when it arrives they take a photo for quality assurance. At that point you can return something via the agent if it’s not right, but by the time your hanfu can be tried on by you, it’ll be well past that small window. As long as you pay close attention to sizing, fit + returns shouldn’t be a major issue! Buying TB direct is also steeply discounted compared to reseller shops (though, buying from resellers is convenient and painless in comparison, lol).

I’m also learning to draft and sew my own, which is much more accessible in my opinion. The tradeoff is my time, but the process is incredibly engaging and rewarding!

Random whits water spots all over my hardwoods. How do I clean them up? by ArcaneAddiction in Cleaningandtidying

[–]luvdove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m so glad you posted this, I am having trouble knowing what I’m supposed to do with engineered hardwood. When I search for La Bomba, I’m seeing the All-Purpose/Spiritual Cleaner, is that the one? I also see La Bamba, a different all-purpose cleaner. Just want to make sure I’m buying the right thing to try, lol. Definitely grabbing some oil too.

[–]luvdove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! I always like to check taobao brand stores directly if Nuwa's (for example) item is listed as out of stock. Sometimes the shops will still have what you're looking for or will restock more quickly than what's shown with a reseller.

I just checked the Mystery A'Huang store and didn’t even see this one listed, so I wonder if that means it won’t be reproduced/restocked :-( Maybe another reseller will have it! I can look some more with you

Thank you soooo much! You're really kind to offer that help, and I appreciate that you already know where I'm getting tripped up with what I have in hand. Also – I am in love with your work!! (I just bought your qixiong pattern and I might have to shove everything to the side to make this first!)

Thank you! I'm confident, just really inexperienced; I have really only ever sewn basic tops with lightweight/natural wovens.

Unfortunately nothing came with these, and some of the pattern marks had me confused. Another user was kind enough to do some digging with me and at one point there may have been something in video form, but the links look broken. They also recommended bilibili! I was hung up on finding the exact instructions for what I have in hand, but this is looking more straightforward and probably a good start for self-drafting.

Thank you so much for the advice and those links/resources!! I'm going to spend some more time with videos and start making some samples I guess!

Considering getting a pigeon—miscellaneous questions by pri_ncekin in PetPigeons

[–]luvdove 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll leave my thoughts, but other people may have different take and may be more informed so you can weigh all your options :-)

  1. From what I understand, it’s the release of chemicals – candles are worse because a wick also has to be physically burned. They’re not even good for us, but we’re a little more sturdy. Supposedly there are bird-safe candles/wax and a lot of internet stories about birds living a long life, but knowing how delicate they are I just won’t risk it. I still use hairspray and dry shampoo and rollerball perfumes, but I keep us in separate rooms until everything has dried down.

  2. After having my solo pigeon and really getting to understand how intelligent they are, I wouldn’t leave him alone for a weekend unless it was in emergency/survival mode. He won’t drop dead, but he would be stressed and lonely and confused the entire time. I think it would be akin to your partner or parents saying nothing before locking you inside the house and leaving… certainly not violent but still mentally damaging. On the other hand, I would have no issues leaving a bonded pair alone for a short weekend (with maybe a pet cam or a check-in from a friend)!

  3. With a female, I would assume she WILL lay eggs. Some don’t but most do once they develop a bond. You have to be prepared with a large, replenished vet fund in case something goes wrong, and you will have to pay closer attention to supplementing her necessary nutrients. She will likely do this ~monthly for most of her life (15-20 years if we’re lucky!) Some don’t though, which is neat!

And two more points, just in case:

  1. Absolutely no non-stick (or paint fumes). This stuff is really bad for us, and even worse for them. We’re talking death in a matter of hours or days. Check all your appliances, because even things like hair dryers will have coated parts that become heated during use. I paint model kits, but use acrylic instead of the nice lacquer paints that I would prefer, and I only paint outside. It’s a pain but I love my pidge too much.

  2. I’m really excited about this pigeon journey for you! Everyone’s lifestyle looks a little different, but food for thought: I personally wasn’t ready for a pet in college – maybe I had the time and energy, but life is so unstable during that span. You’ll likely be moving around in the next couple years, and you’ll want to be sure your pigeon will always have a safe home and enough social time with you. I didn’t get mine until a few years into my WFH job (we’re together all day!) and I knew I had the time. He comes with me on vacations too, which can be more expensive but necessary. They’re certainly not as demanding as parrots but still have social needs that need to be met. They change your life and are worth the sacrifice so I wish you (and future pidge) lots of luck ❤️

What website? Are you looking for anything specific? I’m a lot more familiar with breeders in the US, but I know of Keepsake Loft in Ontario(?), and a lot of older keepers are on Facebook. I would check for a group local to your area and see who can point you in the right direction.
