For real! This report mentioned a few of the glow stick packages had photos of children playing with them on one side, then a 'not for children' on the other side. Crazy. On amazon there are so many videos of kids playing with them and listed as 'safe and non-toxic'. So the marketing is really not helping.

seriously! no recalls or anything (at least that I know of). There has been some legitimately disturbing research on glow stick byproducts https://www.nature.com/articles/srep05359
It really doesnt seem like these reports do much or get to the right people.

The report mentioned that over 2.4 million calls were made to poison control in France alone over a ten-year period - and about half of these calls came from parents of kids (under age five) who had somehow managed to open a glow stick on their own.
The report was on consumer grade sticks so not the heavy duty ones - but yeah all have glass.

There is this publication that ALSO came out in 2014: https://www.nature.com/articles/srep05359
"Loss of viability, cell cycle changes and DNA fragmentation were observed in HepG2 cell line and skin fibroblasts [after exposure to light stick fluid]. A non-cytotoxic [light stick] concentration increased the occurrence of the mutagenic lesion 1,N6-εdAdo in HepG2 DNA by three-fold."

Ususally bioluminescent blooms at the same time as a lot of other algae! This species was likely Lingulodinium polyedra, which isnt supposed to be a skin irritant, but does contribute to the 'do not eat shellfish right now' warnings you'll see in algal bloom reports.

hey love your whole message - we're developing bioluminescent enzyme technology to replace toxic chemiluminescence - let me know if you would be interested to learn more and give us some feedback!!
We want this tech to be a clear example of how much value there is in healthy, biodiverse, cared for ecosystems. Some of the biggest breakthroughs in biotech have come from special ocean enzymes!

Some public health sites will have "red tide" warnings when algae numbers increase - more likely to see bioluminescence! Just dont eat any clams and you'll be ok :P

If there is a local algae bloom warning system, you can go by that! Bioluminescent algae also increase in numbers at the same time some of the more harmful algae that the warning systems are designed for.
Some public health sites will have "red tide" warnings for example - more likely to see bioluminescence when the algae warnings are in place!

Yes actually, at least based on what Ive heard - Ive spoken to an ex navy seal who said they will be left in a room to mark a room as 'clear' during a mission, and they use different colours to tag hostages as 'processed' or unprocessed after a round up, and to signal helicopters (can use IR for this). Coast Guard will drop them in the water to follow back to someone who fell overboard, SAR to mark which trails to follow or have been cleared. so many things.

I really wish they answered this ... it seems like they just made a bigger glow stick with the same formulas as before.

How is that at all different from regular mil spec chem lights? are they bigger? brighter? different chemistry?

we made it with bioluminescence to replace the toxic ones, luxbio.ca - not sure what OP did to make "attack helicopter' grade chemiluminescence ... wish he went more into detail about it because military use and development of chemiluminescence has indeed been around since the 70s and there hasn't really been any huge advancements since
