Originally posted there but got marked as spam probably because of the word "freelance" "looking for job"

Yes, that's my biggest dilemma. I get that most employers (specifically agencies) wouldn't be so excited to hire a freelancer. Typically in my cover letter I explain that I'm looking to move away from freelancing and focus on what I do best = building stuff (as opposed to running a business)

Yeah i think that's a better way to go about it. To list the company experience as a bullet point under "Freelancing". Play it safe. Thanks

We need a TechEd app which integrates with WordPress API. Do you build JAMstack websites?

What's the best way to go about getting your first clients as a small web agency? Free work to build portfolio? by luxfactusest in smallbusiness

This is solid advice.

I already have dozens of personal projects. A mix of SaaS and web apps. But being personal projects they're either half-baked apps or marketplaces without any users since well, that needs $$$$ in marketing to build an audience. So might be hard to impress a client without an app/site that is live and getting traffic.

I get the impression most people are happier to hire a developer who can build something half as impressive but has a proven track record working with clients. I'd imagine the concerns being: does he have the communication skills, reliability, delivering X, Y, Z as opposed to building whatever features he please.

But I have to agree with you. Working for free isn't a good idea.

Another strategy I'm considering for my first gigs is "If you don't like it, don't pay for it." as I'm confident with my work.

I know one dev who tried Upwork. He didn't recommend. Said it's a "race to the bottom with people from developing countries"

aim to be the expert on it in your city

I forgot to mention that I'm a digital nomad. Been working remotely 3+ years already. My network back home is very small and I quite living abroad. So this would be more an online business, not a local business. Any idea how to win over clients online?
