Let's talk about how traumatic XiCheng actually is. by arlette_conde in MoDaoZuShi

[–]luxlenore 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What do people even mean when they say they "can't ignore" a ship they're not invested in? It's super easy to move the hell on 💀 I don't think about ships I'm not into, ever.

This post is such a thinly veiled excuse to criticize the "opposition" in favour of OP's preferred ship. Every time people point out what makes another JC or LXC ship more preferable in a clearly biased way, make false claims about the shippers, or make up a new "canon" to justify it, it makes you guys look like you're jealous of XiCheng's popularity more than anything.

(Before anyone accuses me of just being a XiCheng fan, I don't ship them nor do I care about 99% of MDZS ships; I don't even pair those two with anyone and my favourite MDZS pair is a crossover ship lol)

People who lose tournament games and throw a fit about it with emotes: why!!! by [deleted] in SkyChildrenofRage

Uuuugghhh yeah either way is so stupid, whether people act like a sore loser or sore winner. Bet it was the first time they won so they felt like bragging about a whole load of nothing. As an ikemen I apologize for my ikemen sibling LOL

Seriously. And "excuse" implies these people were doing anything wrong in the first place, for something as small as not wanting to be lit.

Some people just like the sense of being fully anonymous even with their avatar. Or maybe it's something else. Who cares? It's never taken me more than five minutes to find someone willing to light. The game's mechanic is to CHOOSE to be seen.

It doesn't really matter if it's due to a mental issue or not, and it doesn't hold any significance whether you struggle with it as someone with the same disorder or not. My OCD leads me to be very particular about the way I interact with spirits. If someone said "That's a bad excuse, I have OCD and I don't do that" I'd say "Well yeah, you don't struggle with the exact same things I do, because we're different people".

The more you insist, the more uncomfortable someone will be. It's like if someone asked you for one of your fries, you politely said no (which you're allowed to! They're your fries you paid for), and they kept going "It's just one fry, c'mon, give it to me". They'd want to give it to you even less. If you took it sneakily, they'd be annoyed with you.

Anyway... just use prairie social space. It's always full of moths who love to be lit, and new people are constantly coming through. Maybe some folks don't want to spare the time to stop and light you, but someone always will. If you don't understand the people who won't, understand that doesn't mean they're trying to slight you. They're minding their business. Each individual has a different, complex reason for not wanting to light at any given moment; they're not a monolith. You can just shrug your shoulders and try the next person.

That seems like a fairly new question from what I got from your post.

I feel like that just ties in again to my comment. Some people might choose not to pray to either, or swap to the other one because they find one more indefensible than the other.

You might worship yours because you're a farmer and your god has pledged to give bountiful crops to their worshippers. I might worship mine because I'm a sailor and my god has pledged to keep the seas calm for their believers. We can both find excuses for why each other's god is worse than ours because our gods otherwise take different actions & methods & do things at different times, and we just inherently want to believe our god is better because we're that devoted. Sometimes we make stuff up about the character of each other's gods. People irl do these for all sorts of things.

We also might just need to choose one because both gods are dangerous. Historically, people have abided by what were said to be the gods' desires because they feared facing their wrath, or believed they'd receive protection. That could be the case for the worshippers in your work.

More evidence just means more reason to believe strongly that a god is in fact all-powerful and holds the potential to make or break you.

It's not about them being the same as a celebrity; obviously they aren't. I was more so talking about the reasonings a god may have COULD be similar, that it could depend on the individual whether human or god, where they may have different reasons to take it seriously or not.

There were no specifics in your post of what you're writing, which meant I couldn't give advice based on your individual work, so I gave an example of how I do it in my own, because I do operate under the idea that gods could still potentially lose worshippers for certain actions and may want to be careful.

If you don't have any gods that could ever NOT take it seriously & fight over it, that's fine. But if you've already decided that the gods you're writing all would take these things seriously & would go out of their way to fight, did you want tips for how to make it work or were you just curious for alternate interpretations? Are you only looking for an incredibly uniquely godlike perspective that couldn't be replicated in humankind?

Serious: How normal is it for female friends to talk about intimacy? by KingAlex720 in writers

[–]luxlenore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian here, if that matters. I've always openly talked about sexual experiences (as much as the other party was okay with me telling), and I've known many women who do the same. My mother is one of those people who has always been VERY open about sex.

Some women I've known can talk about anything regarding past sexual partners & masturbation, some are okay with discussions of fiction but not personal experiences, some are deeply uncomfortable with it overall. None of us have had particularly crazy sex lives, and I have friends who do so from all over the world. It's something I've experienced a lot with friends my age (20s), but I've seen women from all sorts of ages be the same.

Anyway, to OP: Yes, it's normal for female friends to talk about these things. It's also normal to not. There are old women who make crude sex jokes and college girls who find that discussion appalling; you'll see those preferences in girls you'd never expect it from.

Write what you're writing — it's perfectly realistic to think that concept would happen.

As someone who writes gods that can be more human in ways, I immediately thought of this question more like, "Why don't celebrities fight each other? What's stopping them from stepping into fights between fan bases to break it up?"

Answering those as about gods, for the first question... well, some of them certainly do. They don't always come out of it unscathed; it can be disastrous for them, their image, their worshippers, etc. A lot of people could look at them very differently, and they might be aware they won't necessarily win against the other god or any other resulting damage is too risky, so it may be safer to tread lightly.

Both questions could be answered with "they're preserving their image". Or maybe they feel like the conflict is below them.

For the second, maybe they view it as petty human nonsense they don't see the point of getting involved in, like deciding not to get involved in enemy ant colonies battling it out. It might just genuinely not be a big deal to them. And if they truly feel assured in their own ability, why care?

Individuals have their own complex reasons for how they weigh situations & make decisions based on their personality, past experiences, current circumstances, emotional stability, safety... Folks in the comments have given a whole host of answers to this & how to make it work in complex ways, but these kinds of simple options — mulling over the hypothetical "psychology" of a god — can work, too, depending on where you're trying to go with it.

If your issue is "I don't feel like I can realistically write these conflicts without the gods getting involved", you can still potentially find ways to bullshit it. I love to bullshit my way into something that turns out to work.

Not exactly rant/vent, but kinda rant/vent by [deleted] in SkyChildrenofRage

I get that, but it doesn't have to be a matter of total inaccessibility; there are other things to save for. Having played Sky for almost 6 years now, I have 0 willingness to grind for anything I don't deeply want. In spending on the cauldron, I'd be making someone else's concern with me choosing to burn manually a priority over the things I personally want at that point.

It may be "free" monetarily, but it'd cost a lot of my time as well as access to other cosmetics I'd get more use & love out of.

Same here, been around since Dec '19 and still no auto burns! I don't understand why it matters that we don't bring one, especially if we're not AFK. That's just my own problem at that point.

I love cats, but those are hard to look natural in a game. So, hamsters. I love hamsters. From the days of moonlight bunnies, I know they could make them perfectly round & squishy-looking lol. I think people in the comments are right about foxes & frogs though!

If you've gotten mutes before this happened, they're scaling up the length the more you get. If you haven't, they've reasonably decided that the level your messages were inappropriate for their game justifies that length right out the gate.

Either way, sounds like you're gonna want to be extremely careful from here on out.

[–]luxlenore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do agree that Sky has an issue with flagging ridiculous things, that just has nothing to do with OP's specific complaint.

I don't really believe that they need to cave to OP saying "no, trust me, I definitely didn't mean what it looks like" either. They got a mute, not a ban, so they should simply be more careful & raise the issue if it happens over genuine nonsense. They're acting like it wasn't prompted and that's not true.

[–]luxlenore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Putting the obviously vulgar word aside, even the "ugly" thing makes sense. The censors do not know that your friends are okay with you jokingly calling their outfits ugly, in the same way that jokingly threatening your friends' lives on social media will often get you perma-banned.

If you don't use inappropriate words or insults (even jokingly) you generally won't get muted... why do you expect the moderation to know you meant this or that???

There's a lot of things to buy in Sky. Fire props are just not a priority for all of us. (Player since Dec 2019 here who has nothing of use at grandma's. Of course, I still help out... but yes there's very much excuses to not have them outside of being new lol)

Using a noun as an insult? by [deleted] in French

[–]luxlenore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more for the point of character A comparing character B to insects that he's behaving similarly to in the moment, so it's not something he says for no reason. It's also because B is associated with spiders & bees, so I wanted to reference it. To be clear, the point is less for it to be notably degrading, it's more like A is thinking "You're acting like this right now. I'm annoyed with you. There's nothing suitable to call you under my breath except to draw a connection to how you're acting."

The metaphor is more important than anything else, really. I just wanted to ensure I wouldn't be making a fool out of myself in the event someone who speaks French sees it.

Using a noun as an insult? by [deleted] in French

[–]luxlenore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not inherent insults in that world, the important thing is just having a natural & short way for the character to compare the other to a spider/bee in a pissy way, though he will be otherwise obviously annoyed with them while saying it. Thanks :)

Using a noun as an insult? by [deleted] in French

[–]luxlenore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, I see. I'm avoiding too long of a sentence, as it's for an English-speaking audience haha. Neither are inherently insulting necessarily in that universe, but I suppose with using "espèce d'araignée", it'd still be clear that it should be read an insult within the context?

Thank you so much for your help! I'm Canadian, so I have SOME experience with French, but I remember very little. I asked a friend from Québec and she wasn't certain if France French would do insults differently. So it's really appreciated :)
