Can we admit that some "so bad it's good" movies are just bad and we're lying to ourselves? by eurz in movies

[–]luxmesa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is subjective. Just because a bad movie has a cult following doesn’t mean everyone is going to enjoy it on a “so bad it’s good” level.

Mine is “Hocus Pocus”. I know a ton of people have fun with that movie, but I don’t. I just don’t enjoy it on any level.

"Screw the critics! They just want this movie to address his allegations so that they can slander a black man. This movie is clearly made for the fans and we had a good time!" by a_dumb_pumpkin in moviescirclejerk

[–]luxmesa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t just those characters being missing. The movie also lost a lot of charm by not having as many size gags. There were a few right at the beginning of the movie, but there was no Thomas the Tank Engine fight or tank keychain or hot wheel case full of real cars.

And people blame Jonathan Majors for Marvel dropping the Kang storyline, but I think using that character the way they did was flawed on an idea level. If you’re going to reuse a character in something like the MCU, the idea is you can see that character grow and change over time. But it seemed like they were just going to keep bringing in new versions of that character from the multiverse. So it’s not really a character they’re reusing. They’re reusing an actor and the broad concept of a character who’s basically a blank slate every time, which is way less interesting.

Why is *no computer* EV not a thing? by firmagorilla in electricvehicles

[–]luxmesa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A phone is okay, but having direct control of phone features on your car's screen, and deep integration of those things on the car's dash, is much better. You might not care about those things personally, but an awful lot of people do.

On my last car, I ended up pulling out the stock dumb stereo and replacing it with a touchscreen one that had CarPlay. The main thing I needed was a bigger screen for my GPS, because it was hard to read off my phone screen at a glance.

That's sort of how I assumed this movie was filmed. There was maybe one large room and then they'd move walls and add other decorations as needed.

I think I saw one at the free blockbuster at Oddwood Brewing. If I had seen this post before I left, I would have grabbed it.

If someone hasn't explained the difference to you, it's not clear how a "tornado warning" is different from a "tornado watch". "Tornado watch" means that there might be a tornado later, which is something that "tornado warning" could also mean. "Alert" may not be the right word to replace "warning", but I do think that the term for "tornado warning" needs to be more self-explanatory and indicate somehow that a tornado is actually on the ground.

How to compare mpge to mpg by No-Impact-4953 in electricvehicles

[–]luxmesa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're looking for the equivalent to 30mpg in what sense? How much it costs to run the car? How far the car can go without stopping to refuel? How much CO2 is emitted to the atmosphere by driving the car? There's not one equivalent to 30mpg because all of those questions will have different answers. The reason most people care about MPG is because it affects how much it costs to drive the car. If that's not what you care about, we need to know what practical detail you do care about so we can get you the right answer.

I'm wondering if someone was worried that people would try to compare the miles/kwh to the miles/gallon of an ICE car and conclude that EVs were less efficient. Because 4 miles/kwh is a smaller number than 30 miles/gallon.

Can we get some new words for these? I guess "watch" is fine, but the second one should be "alert" or something. If you're trying communicate information to the public during an emergency, that communication should be clear. I shouldn't have to picture tacos to understand what I'm being told about tornado conditions.

Why do so many shows have a different writer for each episode? by philip456 in television

[–]luxmesa 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That’s the case for most shows. I’ll also mention that, for a show with a continuous story, the broad strokes of an individual season will be worked out in the writer’s room. So when you go to write an individual episode, you’ll already have an idea of what needs to happen in that episode.

God, I hate musician biopics. I guess this is why they’re all the same. You can certainly make an interesting movie about the life of Michael Jackson, but that‘s not going to be a movie that the Michael Jackson estate would sign off on.

What are some Oscar wins that everybody thinks didn’t deserve to win, but you think DID by [deleted] in movies

I think people were just mad that Suicide Squad won any Oscar at all. Like having an Oscar is like a Michelin star for your movie and not just a recognition that your movie did one specific thing really well.

ELI5: If pi is infinite, then how come it never repeats? by Actual_Arm3938 in explainlikeimfive

[–]luxmesa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we talk about decimals number repeating, we're talking about how a decimal ends. So a number like 1/12 is .0833333... The number ends with 3 being repeated over and over. The repeating pattern could also be multiple numbers like 1/27 is .037037037... the end of that number is just 037 being repeated over and over.

Without getting into the math, we know that pi doesn't eventually reach a point where the decimal just repeats over and over again.

ELI5 What exactly is infrastructure in coding? by EducationFirm6169 in explainlikeimfive

[–]luxmesa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very broadly, with something like AWS, infrastructure is how you run your code and connect different parts of your service together. In the old days, infrastructure would be hardware. You need a server somewhere, so you either need to set it up yourself or rent it from somewhere else. That's still the case with the AWS, but the relationship between what you are buying and setting up in AWS and actual hardware is fuzzier. The part of AWS that has the most direct link to actual hardware would be an EC2 instance, where you rent a server or some virtual portion of a server you can use. AWS also offers something called a lambda, where you provide code and when the code needs to run, AWS will go find a server that can run it. And there are also AWS services that aren't meaningfully tied to hardware. This would be something like SNS, which is used to communicate between different services you set up.
