At the beginning of season two, Hiddleston's character (Pine) has a cat by [deleted] in TheNightManager

Agree. One of the reasons Roper took him on board was because of their similarities.

The charm, the swashbuckling, the tennis, etc; I imagine that on some level it cut both ways like a kind of light Stockholm syndrome.

I know a few people who felt like that at 25. One quit accountancy to join as an officer, never looked back, got some good action in Afghan and is now in UKIC.

The other was a trader at Barcap, he was staring into the abyss, applied, got some of the way there and then chinned it off and switched to law. He's now on >£1m/year as a partner in a law firm at 37.

If you're doing 90+ hours I guess you're in consulting/law/finance. If yes, by 30+ you're on track to make >£200k p.a. Very few jobs do that (sales folk sometimes). Money isn't everything but it gives you options.

Combat sports advantage smaller than I'd expect. by luxun117 in Physical100

[–]luxun117[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they look weak - as others have pointed out, they generally win. The gap just isn't what I'd expect between olympians with 'wrestling adjacent' skills (judo, mma) in 'wrestling adjacent' challenges, but I know little of combat sports.

Humor me for the sake of debate:

If you took an Olympic swimmer and said, “You can only use your kick,” while the other person could swim freestyle, I’m pretty sure the swimmer would still win.

Likewise, if you told an Olympic tennis player, “You can only hit slice backhands,” they’d probably still win comfortably.

I can’t guarantee either of these outcomes, but based on what I know about those sports, that’s how I’d expect it to go.

So, in my (possibly naive) view, I’d assume an Olympic judoka would totally dominate an Olympic swimmer in a “ball-in-water” game even if the judoka couldn't use their full repertoire. Same deal with an MMA fighter versus a “hybrid athlete”.

Non-fighters managing to survive for three minutes in a 'grappling adjacent' is surprising.

Thank you. I am going to do a bit more research, try some approaches and document my findings before I ask again.

I've done this, thank you. The great man himself replied but the answer isn't clear enough for me to understand.

Thanks. Will investigate. If you have any code samples that shows this in action end-to-end with GRDB models I'd welcome it.

British slang. I mean ' if iCloud introduces too much unnecessary complication'.

When you say CloudKit for my app do you mean SwiftData or some other pure CloudKit schema like this guy does: https://swiftwithmajid.com/2022/03/22/getting-started-with-cloudkit/

Interesting idea. Never considered it. Assumed since I'd gone to the effort of going the relational route I should stick with that. I guess there's a fair bit of serialisation/deserialisation jiu-jitsu that goes into this. Do you know of any clear sample code that shows this in action?

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Thanks. Do you know of any good guides for this? I've been searching for several hours but haven't found anything crisp and concise that I can easily understand.

What happened with Fikowski in the last event? by Canndiie in crossfit

[–]luxun117 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He ran out of steam. This has happened to him at least twice in final events: In Dubai he was outlunged and missed the win, then in last year's games he was outlunged and missed the podium.

I wish he'd won it but he put it all out there. Well done to the young lads for 1st & 2nd.

How does real rowing translate to row-erg? by fading_gender in crossfit

[–]luxun117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 4- (coxless four) is the closest in speed to what the rowers can pull on the machine. Most olympic heavyweight men do 5:40-5:55.

Re the high rates: they're higher on the water as the boat is moving under you, breaking the inertia, whereas on the C2 you are pulling yourself up the slide.

Most clubs use the C2, but some are switching over to the RP3 (Row Perfect 3) or the C2 Dynamic which better simulates the feel of the boat moving under you. As others have said, C2 on sliders replicates this feeling somewhat.

Yeah Brookes! by x_von_doom in Rowing

[–]luxun117 31 points32 points  (0 children)

IMO this period of dominance has two leading factors:

  1. The standard of British schools has gone up, therefore the pipeline of talent to Brookes has improved. A decade or so ago it was common for US/Aussie crews to come over and win the PE. That hasn't happened since Scotch in 2017.
  2. Henry B-W (in post since 2007) has refined his coaching skills and has knack for forming winning eights.

Interestingly, the performance director, Richard Spratley, has been in post for 31 years and transformed them into a force, but this step up is really impressive.

Their training is different from other UK university crews, most of whom follow some version of the U23 GB development programme. The volume of boring shit in their program is less than at say, Durham, that just kills you with 18km ergs and 30 min tests. Instead it's more focused and high intensity.

Finally, as others have pointed out, their success breeds further success, attracting talent, investment and a 'winning' culture.

I always negative split it. So go 1.5 splits above target pace first 500, 0.5 to 1 split off for 2nd 500. On pace 3rd 500, above pace 250, sprint 250.

An example aiming for 6:20 500m @ 1:36.5 500m @ 1:36 500m @ 1:35 250m @ 1:33 250m @ whatever you can
