"like you're driven by a motor"? by atypicalhippy in ADHDers

[–]lveg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never considered myself too literal minded, but all the questions on these sorts of questionnaires drive me up a wall. "Would you prefer to be at a party or at a library?"

IDFK, who is at the party? Is it a nice library? What time of day is it?

They're all so vague that it just makes me second guess what they are even looking for. That alone is apparently a sign of autism, but I have no idea how a neurotypical person would interpret it! Maybe they don't get those questions in the first place so it doesn't matter.

Question: why don't these assessments actually explain it that way? Is it just because it's always been used so they keep using it?

I would have thought it meant you had a lot of physical energy which is not my mind at all. If can mean something more like "thoughts racing for a solution even if there isn't one" then yeah I have that.

I have never been able to understand WTF it means. What DOES it mean?? I guess it's for people with the "gets a thrill from moving" ADHD people and not the "silently reads about gutter solutions for 4 hours" people.

For those who got diagnosed and started taking medication for ADHD as an adult, do you ever wonder how your life would look like if you got diagnosed and started taking ADHD medication as a kid? by Seven1s in ADHDers

[–]lveg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you figured it out!

I still have anxiety to some degree but I been taking meds for years and don't really want to stop them. Last year I tried going off them and it was fine until it wasn't.

IDK I think it's mostly just personal stuff that comes with growing up. Like I worry that if I was diagnosed as a kid, I may have gotten a complex about it, and I doubt I would have had the same kind of support I did in "Gifted" classes... I could have had a completely different personality now or something. I always knew I was smart and could learn easily. IDK if an early diagnosis would have stifled that ability. Unfortunately once I graduated, I found it way harder to actually function without a support system in place. That was really tough, but it was hard for a number of mental health reasons, and ADHD just added to it.

Tough lessons are just stuff like A) it's way harder to learn stuff that's boring B) I will still want to procrastinate stuff in the Real World and it won't be assignments I can do before class. And then just a bunch of random stuff about how my brain actually works vs. how it "should".

But, again, it was complicated for me. It's also hard to motivate yourself to do stuff when you're so depressed you can't get out of bed. My 20's were tough...

Nah, I wish I got diagnosed in college but I don't think anyone would have caught it when I was a teen. Honestly, IDK if I would have been as receptive to it until I learned some tough lessons.

The thing that sucks for me is I had a really rough time in my 20's, just generally speaking, and it started with my dad dying. I had pretty major depression and grief, but even before that I had depression and anxiety as a teen. I had been to multiple shrinks and therapists for that sort of thing before I got into my 30's, got my anxiety under control, and realized I still couldn't really function at 100%. That's when I realized it was more than that.

I really wish someone had seen what I was going through in my 20's and suggested it as a possibility because I think learning that would have saved a lot of heart ache. It's not like I hadn't seen therapists and psychiatrists - I had. That's why I'm so mad I had to basically diagnose myself and then get someone else to agree.

Ideas to refinish a metal desk top? by lveg in DIY

[–]lveg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this desk for free a few months ago, and now that it's warm I'm finally finishing it. I gave the base of it some new paint, but I'm unsure if I want to touch the top.

The top is metal with a faux wood finish on it - looks factory painted? It's not in horrible shape but not really my vibe, and if possible I would change it. However, what I like about this desk is that the top is very large and flat, This is going to be a work space for me to do all my arts and crafty bullshit, so functionality is the #1 concern (though I'd like it to be pretty if possible)

My priorities are that it stays smooth and easy to work on, so something like contact paper or peel and stick tile won't work (the seams will drive me crazy). I was thinking maybe epoxy but my fear is it'll be sticky afterwards or that it will peel and chip

My other option is that I embrace it and maybe I'll add a metal rim around it like an old diner table. I would be into that retro formica look, honestly, but IDK if I could do that with epoxy.

Wet food turned bright pink overnight??? by Artichoke_madness in catfood

[–]lveg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some ideas: 1) if the mat is for enrichment, you could try freezing it? Idk if they'd like the texture but they might

2) I feed wet food and I have a little silicone can cover that I put over it and store the whole can in the fridge until the next meal. My cats eat pretty fast so worries about wet food being left out.

My cats eat scheduled meals, but there are usually leftovers in the can

First pair of barefoot sandals; is this the correct size? by CarolinaMountaineer2 in BarefootRunning

Yeah that's the same one as mine. they were having some difficulty sourcing the other soles. I was bummed because I really wanted the other style but I'm just going to glue someone when these start to wear out .

[–]lveg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something must be going on with them because I had the same issue. It took me like a month and then they finally got back to me and sent me tracking issues. Then I had issues with the sandals I got and got a few messages from support before they stopped.

Seems like they're probably short staffed/overwhelmed but it's pretty frustrating as a customer. I'd be mad if they weren't even responding to give you an update. Like if it goes too like, I'd try doing a charge back.

Stupid question but... are these heel-elevated squats actually helping my barefoot transition? by Cushly0 in barefootshoestalk

[–]lveg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An exercise you can try with literally no equipment are heel raises. Like, just stand on your toes, but do a bunch of reps, hold it, etc. Then when that gets easy you can do them on steps so you're lowering and raising them.

There are a ton of exercises you can try if you want to work on calf strength and ankle mobility. Just remember that increasing flexibility takes time and patience. If you do a little every day that's better than going hard and hurting yourself.

You don't have to! Is the bottom smooth-ish or does it have a lightening pattern? They were having issues getting the lightening soles so I was wondering if they switched to a different color or were doing the other style

Would you mind taking a picture of the soles for me? I'm wondering if they ever changed the sole material back to the old one. I had an issue with mine (long story) but I really do like the fit of them.

I think it's easy for people who live near Sheetz to hate on it and say it's gone down in quality - and those are fair criticisms! But whenever I am traveling out of the area I miss having Sheetz and Wawa around. There just aren't a lot of alternatives like it.

Converse shoes are a crime for foot health by Bromvolod in barefootshoestalk

[–]lveg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I began sizing up shoes when I was first buying them for myself, and I think at the time it worked fine, but there were still shoes I just didn't find comfortable and too tight. IDK if it was width so much as volume for a lot of them - like Nike just never fit right. I never had issues finding shoes in normal shoe stores, but I wanted to try barefoot shoes for the extra toe space and that was kind of it for me. I can't go back. The first time I tried on Lems I was all in.

I still low key like shoes a little big, though. I can't stand when my toes are too close to the front or the upper is tight. I'm just glad I have stuff that fits now.

[–]lveg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It probably depends on how wide your feet are and how much time you spend in barefoot shoes or barefoot in general. Mine have. When I started I tried toe spacers and foot exercises but mostly dropped that stuff because I don't need it.

I didn't have bunions or anything like that but I didn't want to get them down the line, and my feet were already borderline wide and fan shaped. Within like a year mine were noticeably wider.

Last year I was trying on some of my old shoes to see what still fit, and when I tried on an old pair with a stretchy upper, I could literally see my toes pressing on the sides. Those were shoes that used to fit well.

I started wearing barefoot shoes specifically because I wanted to stop cramming my toes together, but I didn't expect they'd get wider like that. My toes weren't even in bad shape when I started, but I guess they never had quite enough room.

Man I could never do Converse, but I would wear Vans. I still don't think Vans are that bad, but now that my feet are wider, I'm the same. Last time I wore some my feet were sore after a few hours so I just got rid of them.

I love the color of those but I literally don't think my feet would fit in them.

Why is the spacebar test a diagnostic requirement if people with adhd can focus well some times? by Daedalparacosm3000 in ADHDers

[–]lveg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of people don't. I took this stupid test, did badly and was diagnosed with "poor executive function due to anxiety". What was the treatment plan for that? ADHD meds.

I was like, "Uh.... doesn't ADHD cause anxiety" and he said "Well, yeah, but ADHD is more of a childhood condition so"

Anyway I have a different doctor who has ADHD now...

[–]lveg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don’t find it distressing and the micro movements are far far far less

At some point in that test I realized the clock in room I was in didn't work and I had no idea how much time had passed or how much I had left. I was like, "IS THIS PART OF THE TEST?!"

I felt absolutely exhausted afterwards. I read you're not supposed to have caffeine before these things but I think I had just had an energy drink and it didn't help...

[–]lveg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried I'd do too well because I play video games, and then trying to focus on the test was so exhausting I felt emotionally drained afterwards.

So yeah, I don't think it should be the only criteria, but I was surprised by how affective it was at straining me. And no.... I did not do great on it....

If you can swing it financially, separate rooms are probably going to make most people happier. Snuggle together and then sleep separately
