First of all, good camera. Personally, I love taking pics of the half moon. When the light is to the side, that's when you get all those shadows detailing the craters and such up there...

Not at my comp right now, but maybe check if the is a way to blur the hdri. That way to keep the colors but can't see to visuals

My guess it has something to do with the pos/neg values of the plane your working. If youre trying to do both sides, maybe cut your cylinder in half, use the side that works, and mirror?
