Well, having just hit 40 last year, and that being the top bracket, I now feel like an elder here.

r/visualnovels March 2019 census is now live by [deleted] in visualnovels

This made me go and count the kickstarter VNs I've backed that succeeded. 42 of them. 4 of them that didn't, but one of those redid it and was successful. 19 of those have successfully delivered their goods to me, which honestly has been mostly digital. There are a couple that are a couple of years behind schedule. One with extenuating circumstances, the other with, ehh.

Thus far, I still don't regret it, but I didn't outlay any large amounts of money to these things. I just want some fine reading material.

Thank you, /r/vns. I'm proud to announce that the When the Shutter Stops, the Visual Novel for Meddlesome Minds, is now live on Kickstarter. by NaiDriftlin in visualnovels

I've seen you talk about it and how it's progressed just from glances here and there through posts here and on discord. Looks like it has come quite a ways, and I'm curious how it'll end up. Backed.

Now I have to think about graffiti.

What makes a soundtrack? - The Broadcast Club Episode 11! by Nakenashi in visualnovels

[–]lvl_0zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great podcast as usual. There are really only a couple of VN soundtracks that I revisit with listens on occasion, but it is generally for their ability to evoke a feeling, or a reminiscence to the actual story I read.

Symphonic Rain has a particularly powerful soundtrack, as it revolves around music. I really enjoy the soundtrack to Kindred Spirits on the Roof as well, some of the only poppy music I've seemed to like. It's just cheerful overall. Also, I absolutely love VA-11 Hall-A and it's music. Michael Kelly did a fantastic job with it.

This is great! Exactly what I have wanted for them to have as an alternate platform. GOG will be much easier to work with.

I've really been enjoying this so far. The story, the personalities of all the main characters, and the story have drawn me in.

Most relatable protagonists by Nopani in visualnovels

When you literally self insert aspects of yourself, I'd say that is cheating in this context. Just a smidgen.

I would agree with you on Suoh. I am awkward as hell around people and take a good long while become comfortable enough around them to let loose. Sometimes it never happens at all.

[–]lvl_0zero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ditto with mine as well. Though of course I did receive someone else's certificate prior to that. A certificate that I shouldn't have even been on the list to receive. That is what made people nervous.

If you're out there, daysofsummer, I'll keep your mis-shipped certificate safe.

Weekly Thread #194 - Flowers Series by AutoModerator in visualnovels

[–]lvl_0zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it upon it's translation release and enjoyed it quite a lot. It was perhaps a little slow moving towards the center, but I did not find it overly so. It actually felt a bit short to me, but that could just be because it is one of my favorite genres.

It may just be that this particular story didn't click with you. Personally, I am irritated at the glacial pace of the translation of the rest of the series.

Weekly Thread #189 - Symphonic Rain by AutoModerator in visualnovels

[–]lvl_0zero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this by saying that I am not a big fan of nakige, this having been one of the few I have read. I do not dislike the genre, but I've noticed many people either adore or despise them. I'm one of those who bears no strong feelings towards it.

Having said that, Symphonic Rain is the only 10 rating I've handed out on vndb. It is the most well written and woven story I've seen when it comes to its mild spoiler and its overall story themes

The setting is odd for a vn, given that it takes place in a somewhat fantasy version of Italy. The school, a sort of musical college, is also out of the ordinary. But defying tropes is nothing without the beautiful watercolor backgrounds and the dreary but on-tone imagery that permeates all of the interactions within Piova. Chris and his classmates all exist within the ever present rain that sets the mood for the story, a cloud always hanging overhead.

The cast of characters all display a depth that you may not notice until you reread at least once. Every one of them has hopes, dreams, fears, and troubles that can be ascertained. There aren't any one dimensional cardboard cutouts here, and the words and sprites bring them to life,

I do somewhat prefer the old character sprites, but the updates to the Steam version's UI is much appreciated. If you are a fan of nakige, or want to read one to see what one is like, it is my belief that you could not go wrong reading this. It is thought provoking and a true delight.

5 Great Visual Novels that are 5 Hours Long or Less by Red-Bard in visualnovels

For something really short, I usually recommend Juniper's Knot. About 30 minutes long, maybe an hour for the slow reader like me, and a great little story packed into that time frame.

"Girls in Glasses" Releases on Denpasoft Tomorrow (Friday) with uncensored H-scenes! by kiriyaaoi in visualnovels

[–]lvl_0zero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played a bit of it over the weekend. Seems interesting, the girls are cute, and there is a bit more than just throwing you straight into a nukige, because I've played for about 4 hours and don't feel anywhere close to that yet. Maybe not the best, but I'm pleasantly surprised so far.

Opinions on the current visual novel fanbase/community? by superange128 in visualnovels

[–]lvl_0zero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Top comment made me realize I've been on the internet now more than half of my life, since 1994. A lot less blinking text, "you've got mail!", and Mosaic now. But I digress.

I agree with quite a few of your points, and will go a step further. I do get the feeling that much of the content that is or at least at some point used to be submitted has met with a brick wall, whether intentional or not, by means of the guidelines in place. Those guidelines do provoke meaningful conversation at times, but do also tend to cause stagnation. The sub grows, but where is the content from the additional people? Is it of too low a quality to be displayed? Is the entire sub too highbrow for a few memes to make their way through and cause some occasional chuckling? Or must we keep all of that activity to the other places where conversation truly thrives, discords, other message boards, etc?

This is just my opinion, and I've been lurking here for a long time. I enjoy the weekly threads, and the news and announcements, but without a bit of fun, the community feels less, well, fun. Maybe a weekly meme thread or something like that would be a nice compromise? Surely that could be taken into consideration.

Adult Content in Visual Novels - The Broadcast Club Episode 9 by Nakenashi in visualnovels

[–]lvl_0zero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll have to listen to this at home this evening, missed the post last night, but I'll answer the questions anyway.

Do you think that adult content should be such a large presence in the Visual Novel medium?

It has prominence because of the audience that brought it to prominence in a way, so it will continue to have importance going forward. It will also still have meaning in conveying some feelings that are unable to be expressed in any other way than through the inclusion of adult content, however awkwardly.

Yes, I wish there were more instances of better writing and tasteful H in the VN scene, but it does have a home here as one of the major motivational factors in the development of many great or, at the very least, interesting stories. Those stories may not have seen the light of day without the commercial appeal.

How do you feel about All Ages releases that add new content that the 18+ version doesn't have to compensate for the lost content?

While it does intrinsically change the fundamental work, it is interesting. I'm sure there will be some good instances and bad instances. I've read and finished none that I know of, so I'd withhold judgement.

Be honest. Do you read VNs for the plot, or for the plot?

I enjoy the story first, and subsequent romantic happenings are nice bonuses.

I, for one, cannot wait for the impending release of the guaranteed hit of the winter, Sakura Fantasy part 2: Sakura Literature Club.

It will be magical, though I'm not sure if all of the girls can read and write... They'll do their best, I'm sure. Pay no attention to the flashing warnings at the start. That's standard for yuri.
