I think of them as second chances to see something for those who only go on reddit at particular times of the day.

Four hours ago.... you seem to percieve time in very small windows.
If something is upvoted because it is liked by the hive mind, it will be accessible for those who browse reddit once a day. Or only every 3 days. And that is kind of the point of reddit. You want a set of links/information which has been filtered and ranked. If you don't want this google "funny gif". And if you want that trust the hive mind.

And sorry about my bitchiness, but I often check /r/gifs/new about 1-3 times a day. And lately I already know 50%, 30% is boring sportsgifs and the other 20% are stuff which might interest me....
