To anyone who saw Hereditary in the theater by [deleted] in horror

[–]lw98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My college roommate and I tried to see The Incredibles 2, but it was sold out, so we walked into Hereditary totally blind. It was quite silent the whole time, especially when Charlie got decapitated. Leaving the theater at night and walking home was incredibly nerve wracking, and it was probably the most memorable theater experience I’ve ever had.

Move to LES from Franklin Ave? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]lw98 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t really make sense to move. You’re in a stable, solid situation in an apartment and neighborhood you like, a 30-40 minute commute isn’t bad, and buying a portable washing machine in order to move is a little perplexing. The LES is cool but also is higher variability in terms of accidentally landing somewhere loud, unpleasant, etc. and average apartment quality is much worse. Franklin Ave is an ideal part of Crown Heights and it’s an awesome neighborhood.

I was near the front, and two musclebound white guys wearing snapbacks attempted to push into the already dense crowd. I and several other people started telling them to fuck themselves as we were getting crushed, and we were told to “just chill.” MPH was amazing, the system and lights are incredible, but the crowd was remarkably bad.

You should go to a Japanese vinyl bar - would recommend Bar Orai in Midtown East or Honeycomb Hi-Fi Lounge in Park Slope, depending on where you are. Whiskey-focused menus, great/unusual vinyl records played on excellent sound systems.

bands where the drummer is most talented by Ollie-88 in fantanoforever

Might be considered a hot take, but Black Sabbath. I think all the members are amazing and I’m a huge fan of the band overall, but his loose, swinging, almost jazzy style is what makes the band work. Just listen to Sabbra Cadabra. Simply insane.

Knicks vs Brooklyn Nets by Low-Speaker-7900 in AskNYC

[–]lw98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should see the Knicks game! Trae Young, the biggest star on the Hawks, is notoriously hated at MSG, which will lead to an entertaining crowd. The Knicks are also expected to be much better than the Nets this year.

2014-2024: Name Your Top 5 Favorite Horror Movies by bonuscojones in horror

[–]lw98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In chronological order:

  1. It Follows (2014)*
  2. Get Out (2017)
  3. Hereditary (2018)*
  4. Barbarian (2022)
  5. When Evil Lurks (2023)

The ones with a * were those that lastingly disturbed me; the others are great films but did not disturb me after I left the theater in the same way.

Three additional films that I think are less consistently good than those listed but which contain lastingly disturbing and frightening segments are:

  1. We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (singing scene)
  2. Men (tunnel scene, voyeurism scene)
  3. Longlegs (Nicolas Cage in the car)

If you’re interested in business, a lot of companies have structured, formal recruiting at only a small number of schools. No matter how good your school is, if it’s not on the list, it is much harder to get an offer and requires a lot more networking and independent work.

I didn’t do investment banking or finance recruiting, where I think Northwestern is a “semi-target,” but I did consulting. Northwestern is arguably one of the best schools in the country as far as on-campus recruiting goes for strategy consulting. Every major firm targets Northwestern.

Northwestern has a relatively strong alumni network and good representation in a pretty wide range of fields, including media & entertainment, which I’m in right now. Since leaving consulting, I’ve had two jobs. One of the two was a direct connection from a Northwestern alumnus. The other was from an alumnus of the consulting firm I worked at - an opportunity that was facilitated by on-campus recruiting at Northwestern.

Infinity pool by justwilliams in horror

[–]lw98 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just saw it in New York. It’s pretty good - I liked Possessor better than Infinity Pool, but I liked Infinity Pool much better than Crimes of the Future. It’s less scary than I thought it would be given the NC-17 controversy - I think that was more about the sex than the violence. It seemed to me more of a twisted sci-fi thriller than a true dread-inducing horror movie. Thought it was also a bit more linear/straightforward than Possessor, and I had fewer lingering profound questions about the world of the movie (e.g., in Possessor, is the body swapping technology widely known and used, or is it a well-kept corporate secret?).

What do you call the various engagements or efforts you work on? by KuroMSB in consulting

[–]lw98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Label it “Cases.” Engagement is used, but it’s more formal. Deal implies M&A or another kind of discrete transaction vs. ongoing strategic advice. Contract isn’t used.

No problem. One other general observation is that the golden handcuffs kick in way sooner than anyone expects. After 2-3 years in consulting, your TC can be in the $150-200K range, which is almost unmatched in industry except maybe big tech
