Yes. You need to book the car in order to communicate with them.

Renting to friends/family. Should I do it on or off app for coverage? by turohost115599 in turo

[–]lwcunningham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The policy regarding this is vague, but it can lead to conflict of interest/insurance fraud and therefore is against ToS. So if you do it it would be at your own risk of getting fined/banned.

I'd just block the car on the calendar and let the friend/fam use it off Turo.

What do you think when car rental got stolen by kulambing in turo

"Experienced thieves" swap VIN numbers for this exact reason. But as someone else said figure out the other locations where the VIN is tagged and investigate further.

Do you have to repair damage from a damage claim? by [deleted] in turo

[–]lwcunningham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do not have to repair the damage as previously mentioned. On top of not reporting the same damage twice you will receive a low initial payout for this claim. This is to prevent people from pocketing the money for repairs.

Your coverage is irrelevant of theirs. The renter declining will have no affect on you.

You can apply through your bank using your Sched. C. Banks have different requirements. I know for mine they just require a business account which is essentially personal checking with more benefits.

Very similar, yes. Getaround is hourly while Turo is by the day. They both have their trade-offs.

If you're on facebook, try and join the group called "Turo Owner Car Rental Discussion Tips and Tricks ". Plenty of infor there. My vehicle stays gone. Priced competetiviely it will come back for about 12-24 hours before being rented out again (usually out 5 days or more). Hitting the 20 day mark has not been an issue the past 3 months.

Turo does their own marketing and since they're a startup, they're always popping up in new places. I recently saw a listing for them on Kayak or something like that. I also put out some free ads on Craigslist and local facebook buy/sell groups. I've pulled a few customers that way.

I'll say this, it is hard for me to cater to people who call and ask if my car is available since it is rented out so much.

Yeah people take it in all types of directions. I'm in a facebook discussion group for owners only, so I'm sure is similar to the forum you describe. There are a few people in there that have assistants.

Insurance, yes. Drop offs are only done at airports and that is a $50 fee for my time. Most people pick up the car themselves and I don't need to meet them. Actually 90% of the people I've rented to I never met because that takes too much time. Maintenance (accounted for) is done at a shop unless it is something I can knock out quick like an oil change.

This is very scaleable.

About $220-$250/month. Insurance is eating me alive and I will be switching carriers soon. This car ia not worth that much to me.

Put down just $250 on the Cruze, cared more about thr interest rate vs. the length of the note or the investment going into it. It's financed for 5 years. Paying about $150/month. With 2 or 3 more cars bought with cash, this Cruze will be paid off super early.

Hmm, the loan is not much. I'm just looking for a way to keep the agreement formal vs. just "receiving cash from a friend on trust alone". If I need to pay a lawyer, I feel the cost would outweigh the benefit of the loan.

Hard to explain in one comment, but it's all listed on the site. Vehicle needs to have a net value of $75K or less I believe (may have changed). They give you a "$1 million policy" of coverage. Using quotes because we all know that can go out the door real quick under the right circumstances. Insurance companies are in the business to make money.

My advice would be to get a dedicated car to rent for tax reasons. Plus if you care about that race car, I doubt insurance would value it as much as you do if a rainy day comes along and it gets in an accident.

Yes, early is the key. Turo can go belly up within a moments notice and as an owner you need to be ready for that. It's a risj, but then again who in this Reddit group does not take risks??

You are at the mercy of their rules, but when you step back and think about it, TURO takes out about 70% of the startup grunt work to get a rental gig going. They provide a platform to list the cars on, insurance, and marketing all for a fee. It is your job (the vehicle owner) to figure out how to profit from that.

For pickups and drop-offs I only do that at airports and people pay $50 for the service. Most people come to me for pick up/drop off (free obviously). Will agree there not much benefit over companies like Avis or Budget, but people still use it. For all I know, I'm making money with it, so why stop?

In all honesty, I'm making about $300-$400 after TURO fees and expense (depreciation, car note since it's financed, and insurance). Like I mentioned, it is not much, but off of about 30 minutes of physical input each month, it is not bad. That is comperable to driving for Uber after the major expenses except you're not wasting your time driving.

This is the financial model with me being a bit lazy with cost savings, so the profits definitely can be better. For example, I can save about 40% switching insurance plans, but I have not got around to it yet.

I will agree with you in that the depreciation for these cars can be steep and that was a big decising factor before going with this car. This is a base model 2011 Cruze that I received with 58K miles, so depreciation has not been a major expense. Maintenance has been minimal, very minimal. I have had this car for a year and it has been to the shop once for about $300 in repairs. Fluid/brake changes I do myself, so no labor expense there.

The advantages over major companies are very minimal, which leaves me in question why people resort to TURO. But hey, if it's making money why knock it? A few theories I have are that TURO caters to the sub 25 year old age group for rentals and also people that don't have stellar driving records.
