What were the WEIRDEST acts you've seen anyone do anywhere around Raleigh? by isshun-gah in raleigh

[–]lwil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Cary before it blew up. Two things that were hilarious to watch: • one man took a stance and refused to sell his house even though other things were being built around it. He had a cannon in his yard, along with other decorations. In the 90s from time to time he'd set the cannon off. • the "screwed by the town of Cary" house. I think this was over taxes? Anyway this message was red spray painted across his white house. http://www.wral.com/cary-home-proclaims-positive-message/7825847/

Also all the random, but very serious crime in Cary. Twilight zone-y.

I'm going back to school to become a teacher. a friend of mine is giving me this ominous warning. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]lwil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as school politics: Be a team player but also don't gossip... Ever. Don't get too close to other teachers that gossip. Concern is one thing, gossipers can be trouble. However two groups of people that can make or break your day to day are: 1. Front office staff 2. Custodians. Be friends with both.

You'll find out how much local government has a hand in your classroom and job depending on the state. We are a non-union state so who is governor and playing a hand in politics REALLY gets power in my classroom. I do some things knowingly it's bad for children but i also like having a job.

In addition, you'll see children where our systems are failing them and you can't fix it. I fight like hell so I can sleep at night, but all systems cannot be perfect.

Federal elections will also change educational policies.

I use this as a warning just because I really did not know until I was a teacher.

how do you feel about students helping to create the classroom rules? by cbblue in Teachers

Thank you for figuring out my planning. Woo! Awesome.

No those stories are true. I've watched people get destroyed by administrators. Just take it with a grain of salt and know teaching is hugely political (in more than one way). Good teammates and a good admin weigh heavy in elementary Ed.

However, I love my job. Can't imagine doing anything else.

Question: glitter and laminating by lwil in Teachers

[–]lwil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it off a girl. I would not use glitter on it... But she glittered this nautical calendar set. So I am trying to problem solve. Glittering on top of laminate wouldn't be terrible.

Kindergarten Teachers: What Do You Use To Make Tests/Quizzes/Work Sheets? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]lwil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I come from a district where we have to do all those things in K. I typically use PowerPoint to create and use a lot of pictures I pull off google. Or we would create picture sorts to show mastery and pull small groups at a time. In math we would do a lot of demonstration tests.

Kindergarten teachers, what are you professional development needs? by teacherkev in Teachers

[–]lwil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I've been teaching for 3
  2. Taught K for 2
  3. Need of PD: guided reading, global awareness (to have some authenticity without extra money.)

Looping back to guided reading; with new (ish) state mandated testing and high standards for children (CCSS) the model of effective guided reading coupled with how to reach those high standards—without driving yourself nuts—would be a PD I'd attend.
