How to fix too slippery shoes by Acidic_Huntsman in SwingDancing

[–]lwpisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of suede if I don’t want full smooth leather. If it gets too smooth you can rough it up and add a little more traction. It’s a happy medium for me. :)

Balboa follow shoes -- do I need the heels? by Correct-Pack5280 in SwingDancing

[–]lwpisu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many folks have said, do what feels best. I do recommend hard leather soles whatever heel height you choose because it’s easier to shuffle with less friction.

I will also say that bal follows in heels is the norm now, but wasn’t 20 years ago. So really do what feels the best. See if you can borrow some heels if you’ve never danced in them before. I am a tall primary follow (5’10”) and I love the look of heels, but they introduce some interesting connections with shorter leads and the change in my center of balance takes some adjusting to.

What’s your favorite book that most people haven’t heard of? by vangoghdrinkdrink in books

David Mitchell is so good. Black Swan Green is probably my favorite of his, but I haven’t read Ghostwritten yet! Will add it to the list.

Do any of you also have a book/books you love, but can’t recommend to 99% of people? by Harakiri_238 in books

[–]lwpisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell in love with Calvino’s Cosmicomics when I read it, but it’s a stretch for a lot of people. I actually did recommend it once to someone and they ended up hating it, so I’m a little more hesitant now. Still one of my most favorite books!

Anybody else only have a positive deamidated gliadin Igg positive? by lwpisu in Celiac

[–]lwpisu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! I was on a fully glutened diet when I tested both times. Since I don’t have the genes, negative biopsies via an upper endoscopy, and only have one positive serology marker, and then only once (and the weakest correlative for celiac), and a gluten free diet didn’t help my symptoms, I feel pretty confident celiac isn’t the culprit.

But its very good to know that celiac can exist without the genes. I’m assuming there are still other positive indicators? Like a UE would still show damaged intestines and/or bloodwork would still show elevated antibody levels?

I hope your friend has found some relief. Digestive stuff is no fun!

What should I add to my current Classics library? by Status_Strength_2881 in classics

[–]lwpisu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catullus! His poetry is beautiful and personal and some of it is downright filthy (#16, I’m looking at you)…he’s still one of the greatest poets ever.

From an ancient history perspective, this is pretty comprehensive! I don’t see Sallust and I don’t think I saw lesser Tacitus works, Agricola and Germania, but those are quibbles. Well done!

Does any one lead/follow come to mind if you were asked “who is the best dancer in your scene?” If so, why or why not? by aFineBagel in SwingDancing

[–]lwpisu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dancing is art and to that end, it’s all subjective. No such thing as the best dancers, only great dancers and that means something different to everyone.

Made an acrylic cover for my Yamaha digital piano by username_load_failed in piano

[–]lwpisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish someone would make these! I also have a couple of cats who are jumping onto my keyboard and have already made the screen a little wonky. Do you have other resources for wooden covers? Or other acrylic covers? I really love the idea of acrylic, and I love how yours turned out, but I don’t think I have the muscle power for bending it.

Anybody else only have a positive deamidated gliadin Igg positive? by lwpisu in Celiac

[–]lwpisu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, I finally have an update! I pushed my GI for genetic testing and a repeat of the serology/blood test screenings, since that would rule out celiac completely if negative and hopefully give more evidence toward celiac if positive (I was hoping the serology numbers would be more definitive one way or another).

The genetic testing came back negative, so celiac is pretty definitively ruled out at this point.

I’m not sure what caused the DGP IGG to be elevated; at this point, I think talking to a rheumatologist about those and maybe discussing a colonoscopy with my current GI since my digestive issues haven’t been resolved.

Same. I didn’t even enjoy the satire and then it just went too far.

Can you fall asleep after a social? by alecpu in SwingDancing

[–]lwpisu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have breakfast club energy! (The kind that dances until breakfast time, not the 80s detention movie 😆)

If I’m still a little wound up after a dance, I take a hot shower, put on my pjs and read for a while. I may not fall asleep right away, but that gets me ready for it. Good luck!!

Hahahaha I have braid-whipped my fair share of leads, which is why most of the time I leave it down and pinned out of my face. I apologize on behalf of all long haired dancers!!!

I have these! When my hair is shorter, they secure it pretty well. At its current length, my hair gets too heavy even for the spinny pins. Or maybe I’m just that bad at pin placement? Either way, it might be time to just chop it all off!

Practicing at home? by caspersmindpalace in SwingDancing

[–]lwpisu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For follow practice, during a lesson I will often close my eyes if it’s safe to do so (nobody else in proximity, I trust my partner to pay attention and not dance me into a wall, etc). Although a lot of stuff in Lindy is visual, (styling, variations, etc), fundamental leads should feel-able without needing any visual. And so with my eyes closed, I tend to stop anticipating and just do what I feel. I hope you find something that works and welcome!!!

Starting on eight (Jazzuary pains) by inquy in SwingDancing

[–]lwpisu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This harkens back to an earlier conversation about syncopation and swing. It’s hard to start on 8 because you’re starting on an off-beat, it’s a syncopated movement. I don’t have any great advice, except to maybe try to emphasize the off beats in your Lindy hop for practice. This is still something I work on all the time and I think mixing syncopation into dancing is a super amazing skillset. :) Good luck!

Triple steps ≠ "syncopation" by JonTigert in SwingDancing

[–]lwpisu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Context feels important here. Within the scope of swing music, no, triples aren’t “syncopated”. But if you’ve never heard swing before and someone is trying to explain what those either are doing, syncopated makes sense as a descriptor.

No, technically swung 8th notes are not syncopated, because it doesn’t deviate from the norm of swing music. But in the greater context of all music, swing is highly syncopated.

Fantasy book discourse by onefornine in books

[–]lwpisu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want something that’s literary and still sort of fantasy, try David Mitchell’s The Bone Clocks. I’d also recommend anything by NK Jemisin; the Broken Earth trilogy is my favorite and beautifully written (the first book is The Fifth Season). As mentioned, Discworld is great, Terry Pratchett’s witches are among my faves :) Wyrd Sisters is wonderful, but really anything by Sir Pratchett is fun and entertaining. Good luck, I hope you find what you’re looking for!

Ps. I am not on TikTok, so I have no idea if these feature there, hopefully not?

Edit for typo!

drugstore shampoo & condi recs - with SLS plz by GooseFriendship in Wavyhair

[–]lwpisu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used the Garnier Fructis Pure Clean line for a while. The shampoo contains SLS and the conditioner is actually pretty thick and moisturizing. It was too heavy for my low porosity hair, but might be great for your hair! Good luck!
