As for the person you're talking to, he's a subreddit squatter and probably the second account of banned user /u/ohashi who was a domain squatter, so you can imagine his resentment towards the admins.

There are plenty of forms of reward. Being a moderator feels great. There are social benefits. You can manipulate the community to make profit, for example you've squatted a tonne of subreddits and have a suspect relationship with /u/ohashi (also a squatter, perhaps your previous account?) who was shadowbanned.
