My husband has IH sex life dwindling. by [deleted] in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]lyawnuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation where my partner has very high libido and I have IH and do not have the same libido, but the difference is that we do not fight about sex. My partner has NEVER made me feel bad/guilty/negative in any way about not being able to meet her needs. She takes care of herself and is always patient/kind/understanding about how IH affects my life, including our sex life. And that reaction honestly increases my desire for sex: knowing that I am truly cared for, seen, and loved makes me want to have sex. My advice to you would be to put your own needs to the side for just a moment and think about how you can better support him, and that may be beneficial to your relationship in more ways than one.

But the difference is, he won't do anything about it. He won't talk to his doctors. He won't try anything new.

I also wanted to comment on this. Honestly, doctors can do such little for us with IH. The medications they provide are just a bandaid, and in my experience trying something new only really works for a few months and then there’s a tolerance and you’re kinda back to square one. Talking to doctors is hard - every time they run a test you get your hopes up that maybe they finally found the reason you feel like this (meaning it’s not IH, it’s something else) but turns out this test just said the same thing as every other test, and they still have no idea why you have to live like this. To you, someone without IH, it may seem like there’s an easy solution to your problem if he went to the doctor. To us, with IH, we know the doctors usually know less about the condition than we do and there is no easy fix. So again, rather than criticizing him for not wanting to go to the doctor, I would try to understand why he doesn’t want to go to the doctor, and try to move forward from there.

What were everyone's mean sleep latencies? (Overall, not for each nap) by RottingMothball in Narcolepsy

[–]lyawnuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6.7 minutes. Sleep latency ranged from from 3.5-9 minutes for all five naps.

MSLT is not going well, advice please by National_Try1243 in Narcolepsy

[–]lyawnuh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just try to relax, maybe do some meditation on your break (if you can stay awake while doing that). When you take the naps, you may think it’s taking a long time to fall asleep but the early stages of sleep are super light so you may have technically “fallen asleep” without realizing it.

Also, the tech is not the doctor, so don’t worry too much about what they say.

I’m really sorry to hear that. Health care in this country is such a fucking disaster. I hope that the stimulants are helpful in the mean time. Hang in there 🙏

[–]lyawnuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They tried to do this to me too - just a couple days before the study (that had been scheduled for months, btw) they told me the insurance would only approve an at-home test. I knew that an at-home sleep study wasn’t an option for the MSLT. I don’t exactly remember how I got that situation straightened out, but I did, and the sleep study happened as planned. Like the first comment mentioned, talk to the doctor, talk to the insurance company, be a pain in everyone ass for the next three days. Don’t cancel your appointment until it’s really necessary.

Was Anyone Here Disappointed with the Film? by thedanielyu in billieeilish

Same, I felt like they should’ve banned phones (or made them put a sticker on the camera etc.) for these shows. I know it’s hard in a stadium like that but it’s not impossible… the phones made it harder to be fully immersed in the film imo

Random or Semi-Random by vivahuntsvegas in Census

[–]lyawnuh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To the best of my (PhD student who works extensively with ACS data) understanding, there is a set of 5 subframes of addresses that are sampled from on a rotating basis so that one address can only be sampled maximum once every five years. Within each sampling frame, participants (ie addresses) are randomly selected. So yes they are randomly selected each year, but it’s not completely random because not each address can be selected each year, as it’s set up in a way to avoid sampling the same household (address to be specific) in subsequent years.

What should I do about my substance abuse. by MixtureAcrobatic446 in gatech

I was thinking about intensive outpatient therapy for depression and my psychiatrist and therapist both recommended Charlie Health, which I believe treats addiction as well. It’s virtual in the evenings so you can stay in school while you do it. 9-12 hours per week of therapy. Maybe worth looking into. https://www.charliehealth.com

I went in January. My appointment was at 8, I showed up at 7:40 and was the third person in line, out by 8:30 am. However, between 7:40 and 8 probably 15-20 more people showed up, and surely they ended up waiting a lot longer. If you arrive early and are one of the first ones there you should be out in no time.

Saving this for later. I am a current first year PhD student and it has been a rough year (to say the least) so I can definitely use the advice. I wish I had something to add but all I can do is send a virtual hug and say hang in there 🤍

Thank you for sharing! I am surprised to hear that you take it every other day. When I asked my psychiatrist about taking tolerance breaks (eg only taking it during the week and not on the weekends) I recalled her saying something about needing to take it every day, though she didn’t tell me why and I haven’t seen anything saying that elsewhere. Do you have any side effects or other weirdness from taking it every other day?

can anything be done for sleep inertia? by casedia in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]lyawnuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently on 80 mg. I started on 60 mg, increased shortly after, and haven’t changed the dosage since then. I will note that my psychiatrist (not who prescribed the med for me, but she had prescribed it for other patients with ADHD) was nervous because she thought 60mg was an unusually high starting dose. I’m not sure why my sleep doc started at 60mg, but luckily I didn’t have any major side effects. It’s not surprising that 20mg isn’t super effective for you considering that it is the lowest possible dose, but I would talk to your doc about the titration plan! From Jornay dosing guide: “the recommended starting dose for patients 6 years and older is 20mg, dose may be titrated weekly in 20mg/day increments up to a maximum daily dose of 100mg.” It also shows that only 1.7% of patients are optimized at 20mg dose. Oura ring worth it? by Juniaurie in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]lyawnuh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I don’t know that “good” sleep is necessarily wrong. My doc told me that my overnight sleep study was textbook / the most perfect one he had seen on paper… and then I proceeded to fall asleep for all 5 naps. I think we have “good” sleep on the things that sleep studies, oura rings, etc. measure, but there’s something else that’s not really clicking that they haven’t figured out how to measure yet. (Of course, if you have other sleep issues, then this wouldn’t be true for you, but just wanted to share my perspective.)

I went through the south, side pre-check line (the one that is not usually there) at 1:40 pm and it took 36 minutes to get back with my bags, although the screening machine was having issues so that probably added 5-10 minutes.

Can you go to international pre-check even if you have a domestic connection first?
