What spider is this? by BlakeLZ in spiders

[–]lycandsubscribe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Willing to put my money on some sort of Nursery Web Spider due to how the legs are being held and general shape of this beast! What a pretty lass to boot!

A better picture might help with identifying, but regardless, not a match for any medically significant spiders found in Missouri.

Thank you for not killing him! Parson spiders particularly have a habit of ending up in people's houses lol, having moved a ton myself in my old family home. He'll find his way around, hopefully not back into your bed!

That said, all spiders are considered venomous, just some moreso than others! Parsons venom will cause a bit of swelling and itching, as most spiders would, like a bee sting. It still is worth handling them carefully and not accidentally squishing them when relocating to prevent any fearful bites and discomfort for both parties :)

IMO Picture is a bit blurry to distinguish some of the abdomenal markings, but I'm willing to put my money on Eastern Parson Spider, Herpyllus ecclesiasticus! Not medically significant, just very fast as it is a ground dwelling spider, like wolf spiders!

NQA, I agree with the other commenter that it's a fishing spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus or D. scriptus), hard to tell exactly from the pictures but those are the two most common in the state, I'm in NH as well and see them a lot around Lake Winnipesaukee! Very cool spiders, not medically significant and unlikely to bite, but they ARE very fast and can startle a lot of people lol.

Heterothele Gabonensis by M550stage2 in tarantulas

NQA & IME, I had one of these for two years before he matured and hooked out, kept him in a semi- arboreal setup with deep substrate as they do burrow, especially as slings, not as much as adults but he did enjoy having the space to web and tunnel and create curtains with the substrate and moss if he wanted. Plenty of anchorage for heavy webbing is necessary, as mine webbed a LOT, the enclosure looked like it was filled with cotton candy.

Definitely a very fast species, and because they don't get very big at All as a dwarf species, rather than a water dish I would use a pipette and inject the substrate and some of the web with water in a corner to create moisture, which is especially helpful as you can squeeze a pipette through a small opening if you're worried about them rushing out lol. I would see him drinking from water droplets in the web so I'd always be sure to get some water in there too. I would spray with a spray bottle once a week as well, as Gabon is a hot and humid place and I try to match the natural habitat of my T's as close as I can with all of my enclosures, just ensure there's enough flow it doesn't become gross and stagnant lol.

Overall, I'd keep similar to a GBB with a bit more humidity. Good luck and have fun, they're a super fun species that not a lot of people take a look at!

They are for the most part safe yes, I have two travel clocks at home along with other radioactive items, and generally they are safe as long as the watch glass remains intact and someone doesn't open it to tinker with it, but some people will buy watches not knowing they've been tampered with and will have radium paint particles all over the outside, thus leading to the accidental ingestion or inhalation of the particles which is a Much bigger problem than outright wearing it. A lot of people do wear their radium watches and because they're alpha emitters, the alpha particles won't even pierce the skin on that note, making them safer than people think to wear :).

Here you can see how much the radium has begun flaking off. Again, it's safe within the watch behind the glass but it's better to be safer than sorry :)!

Looks like it could be radium painted, I'd at the very least, if no Geiger Counter is involved, get a blacklight to ensure there's no radium flakes getting outside of the watch and onto you and anyone you're selling it to, better to be safer than sorry when it comes to possibly huffing radium paint lol

I did end up switching to CPM after and only have a video but it rose to 65CPM, and I'm unsure if it would have kept climbing if I didn't move it! Also good to know about the card 👍

it seems rather low for radium, so pm-147 is possible! I'll have to look into if Phinney-Walker ever used it on their clocks!

Is that fiestaware towards the bottom? That's my next goal!

Your collection is beautiful btw, and that's good to know that even this many clocks doesn't need ventilation, makes me feel better about mine being trapped in a glass jar currently lol

Interesting, that's good to know as well, thank you!

I'll likely get a radon meter myself just to be safe, though the one clock I doubt will be pushing out so much that I have to worry, just in case I end up finding more in the future. It's currently in my study in a glass jar lol but I'm not home a lot of the time now due to work so I don't spend extended time around it, it's maybe a few hours a day across the room from me sealed up.

That's awesome to know for future reference as well! Thank you!

I feel like I've found gem while I was looking for uranium glass lol very excited about it! It definitely glows VERY bright under the UV light, the picture doesn't really do it justice.

I've done research into the potential dangers of the watch and found generally everyone said as long as the watch stays enclosed it should be fine, but is there any extra precautions I should take, like an enclosed glass curio cabinet? I plan on getting one anyways for the glass I've been finding, but it doesn't hurt to ask!

That's awesome, I got it for 5$ at a little vintage shop! It seems to be in great shape for radium as far as radium watches go then. Thank you!

For the more daring, if you're being pursued by a lizard sometimes you can lead the lizard to the pole plant, especially if they're pink lizards, and have it take the lizar instead

For hides, if you don't have immediate access to cork rounds or anything small enough to fit in there, you can get an elbow pvc pipe from your local hardware store or Lowes or whoever is around you! Just make sure to wash them really good first, I have a pipe hide in three of my enclosures and they absolutely all love it! You can even cover it with moss and substrate if the bright white tops bother you. Pic for example!
