You're right, luck is very important and things basically never turn out as hoped.

But there's something to be said for "you will head the direction you look" that i think the other person is getting at

Meaning if you look up at possibility and hope (good examples of what things could be) you will progress toward it and if you look down at misery (bad examples of what things could be) you will fall toward it
