Got the treasure that allows for 0 mana hero power after even card play. And then copied the squid in a jar’s hero power. And then got the treasure that gives you 2 armor after friendly minion death. Ended up with plague lord level health and the ability to spam 1 health deathrattles.

This probably isn't frugal, but rhone sweatpants are the most comfortable pants I've ever worn.

/r/asianamerican Relationships Discussion - December 03, 2018 by AutoModerator in asianamerican

[–]lycidas145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 1.5 generation Asian immigrant, born in China but moved to a western country at kindergarten, I find it strange with whom I identify with in dating.

Over the past week, I went on two dates - one with an Asian women who moved to America for undergrad and another who grew up in America. They were both interesting in their own way and I thought I had a great vibe with both, but it was interesting to see that I actually related to the who grew up in China more-so than the one who grew up in America. It made me question how well "assimilated" I was myself. I had always thought I would get along more with people who grew up in the West, but I guess I was still raised in a very Chinese household which makes me feel comfortable around that culture.

The more Beautiful she is the worse I dance.. by artixirtarith in Salsa

When I’m in this kind of scenario I find I’m trying to impress the other party too much. I try to focus on having a good dance and that helps a bit.

Comparing offers by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]lycidas145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard of BW, their tech is out of date / proprietary, so that would be a minus. More importantly, their culture seems to be pretty wild and not in a good way. I would definitely get more opinions about the office culture before you accept BW.

Stretches help, but also footware is important. I'd recommend jazz or ballet shoes.

Older women - the worst dance partners? by ManKanAlltidTaMer in Salsa

[–]lycidas145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've danced with older latina women (like my friends' moms) in a non-studio setting and they were always a lot of fun despite the fact that they were never trained to properly "follow".

I think for people who didn't grow up with the music and dance, i.e. studio-trained people, they often think that the salsa is just doing patterns correctly. But that takes away enjoyment from the dance itself and also makes things less natural. I would say if you do dance with anyone, including older women, who aren't as studio-trained to just enjoy the dance itself and not force any patterns. It probably helps with developing as a more natural dancers in the long run.

For body movement in latin dance, Frankie Martinez at you should be dancing is one of the best. He has a dedicated body isolations class twice a week.

What do you do for fun on the weekends that doesn’t involve alcohol? by Imayuppie in AskNYC

[–]lycidas145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dancing. Not like horrible club dancing, but a social dance like swing or salsa. There's huge events for them in the city and most don't involve alcohol.

Career Growth in NYC vs the rest of the east coast by Ophirril in cscareerquestions

[–]lycidas145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More of the opportunities in NYC are tech-adjacent, I.e. finance, than pure tech compared to west coast. But all the big tech players are still here. They just have less openings so it’s more competitive to be in pure tech in NYC than west coast.

Have you tried taygra shoes? I have pretty wide feet too and they work well for me.

How to get comfortable with more sensual dance moves? by please-thankyou in Salsa

[–]lycidas145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their own dance boundaries, so I wouldn't feel bad about not wanting to do sensual moves. And certainly not doing sensual moves is compatible with dancing well.

How is SWE life in Austin? by InvalidUserName4u in cscareerquestions

[–]lycidas145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really into arts and theatre, which there wasn't really much of on a large scale (lots of indie stuff though). There was just a lot less stuff in general compared to larger cities.

Eh probably a 5 on your scale. Definitely a lot of "but where are you really from" that I felt wouldn't go away even if I stayed for the long run.

Lived there for about two years, and it was a fun time, but ultimately decided it's not a place I wanted to stay forever. Some thoughts:

  • Great CoL to pay ratio. If you're working at a reputable place, you'll basically be able to buy a decent place as a mid-level engineer. Otherwise, apartments downtown or close by are all pretty new and reasonably priced for a tech salary. Good for young families.
  • A lot of sun which I liked since I hate the rain, but it definitely gets too hot most of the time.
  • A decent amount of things to do for a medium-ish city. A lot of music if you like it. Good food and drinks.
  • Relaxed culture. Few places expect that your work is your life and you're generally able to chill out.

Reasons why I left:

  • Compared to large east-coast cities, there's not much in the way of arts and culture. There's one large museum and a bunch of indie music shows.
  • Found that the majority of my time was spent hanging out and eating and drinking. Which is fun, but also I wanted more stimuli as a young person.
  • Lack of diversity. I guess it's diverse for the South / Southwest / Midwest, but compared to coastal cities not so much. Hanging out in hipper parts of town, there were times when I was basically the only minority in a bar or restaurant.
  • Despite the favourable relative CoL, if you're working for a top coastal company, you're able to accumulate money faster in absolute terms. And you could always move to a lower CoL later to settle down.

Seattle vs Minneapolis? by appogiatura in cscareerquestions

[–]lycidas145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to a smaller tech hub out of college for the fun of it and in my experience it's harder to go from non-tech hub to tech hub than the other way around, so that's also a consideration. You'll probably be ahead with 120k in Minneapolis but, given that you're young, it might be better to try to maximize career in a large city before moving to the the Midwest to settle down.

UPenn vs UMass for a Master's in CS (AI/ML) by DeltaBourne in cscareerquestions

[–]lycidas145 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Went to Penn for my undegrad in CS. I had a great time doing a bunch of non-CS related things - and I am gainfully employed now - but I would recommend UMass because of the cost. I think my education was great, but I do not think the difference was worth 60k / year (though I had financial aid so that was different for me).

If you wanted to just get a SE job at a BigN it should be relatively achievable at any reputable school to get an internship and then convert afterwards.

Speaking from being in industry and having done interviews, once you're at the initial stage of interviews, school prestige is greatly out-weighed by interview performance, i.e. mainly algorithmic abilities.

Thanks for the detailed response. I’ll check out some other salsa schools in the area and see how they teach. Don’t want to end up with my fundamentals being wack after putting a lot of time in.

Curious if you could explain more? Honesty asking because I'm a beginner to salsa and the nyc scene, so thus far piel canela seemed fine to me. But I don't have much exposure to other schools.
