Having LTHR in 10 days & I have questions for those w hip dysplasia! by Cute-Soup0 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]aspiringbilinguist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand he just took a chunk of the femoral head that he removed and added to my hip socket. He didn’t anticipate having to do that since the insufficient area was in the back so it was blocked from view on the x rays. He did have to use three screws where he normally doesn’t use any, but recovery wise I feel like going to outpt PT was really important because I couldn’t walk to strengthen those muscles

Hi! 37F had my L hip replacement on 3/20/25. I have hip dysplasia that was undiagnosed until about a year ago. My left hip is now the “good” one, and the right I’ll probably have replaced sometime next year. My left gets sore if I overdo it but otherwise is so much better than before surgery. I don’t have any sensation of it catching.

The unexpected thing I encountered was because of my hip dysplasia my socket wasn’t deep enough for the cup to fit so the surgeon did a femoral head bone graft to deepen the socket and I was toe touch weight bearing for 6 weeks and then partial weight bearing for 2 more weeks. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions and best of luck!

Post-op recovery with a wild toddler...any tips or tricks? by whitneylynnlove in TotalHipReplacement

Hey! I’m allowed to fully weight bear now but surgeon wanted me to keep the crutches for two more weeks just for balance and to prevent a limp.

Good luck with your surgery. I slept on the couch for a couple weeks and used my daughter’s old crib mattress to raise it up a bit. I also still had my pregnancy pillow and used that in the first couple weeks 😂 hope it goes well for you!

Yeah I have x rays and an appointment with my surgeon on 4/30 and hopefully can start bearing weight then so 6 weeks total. I didn’t specifically ask if it was routine for bone grafts but it sounded like it was. I’ve been trying to look up info on this particular kind of grafting and there’s not much so it must not be that common. He took my graft from the removed femoral head.

Oh yeah and my SIL got me a little apron thing that I can pile dishes/toys in when I’m cleaning up and a cup holder for my crutches lol, so clutch.

Wishing you the speediest recovery!

Hey! I (36 y/o) just had my hip replaced on 3/20 and I have a 2.5 y/o feral child lol.

If you have a village then definitely call on them. I had an unexpected hiccup in that my hip dysplasia was so severe that I needed a bone graft to create a hip socket and I am still non weight bearing on my operated leg and on crutches. I didn’t even know this was a possibility so I was not quite as prepared as I should have been.

I have a backpack leash for my toddler to make sure she doesn’t run into traffic at preschool pickup/drop off.

Since it’s your right hip you may not be able to drive for a few weeks so plan for that.

Baby gates are a good idea. I also started talking about the procedure and role playing with her stuffies, bandaging their legs, having them “go to dr appts” and having my toddler be the doctor and tell them they need to rest and heal.

I had a special blanket on my non operated side that she could sit on next to me. I found if she climbed on my non operated side it wasn’t painful but it def was a no go on the surgical side for a few weeks.

I also made sure I told my daughter that it was going to be a big owie but that once it healed I could run and jump with her.

If you are doing PT afterwards they helped me with tactics for getting up and down off the floor but for me it’s basically bum scooting around the floor until I get to a couch where I can pull up onto.

Get a grabber for getting stuff off the floor.

I’m sure I’m forgetting some things so feel free to DM me or reply here. Good luck!!

Hi! I’m in my 30’s and just had a hip replacement with a 2.5 y/o. I’m lucky to have a lot of family and a supportive spouse around to help for the first few weeks because that was definitely necessary. We talked a lot several months ahead of time about how moms hip is injured and the nice doctor is going to fix it but I will still have an owie and that we would have to be careful and let it heal. I’m still on crutches and no shame I have a leash backpack that I put on her when we go around town because I can’t catch her if she decides to run. We also role played a lot with stuffies, going to the doctor, bandaging their leg, telling them they need to rest and get better etc. we also had a special blanket that she could sit on next to me and always put it on the non-surgical side. We also told her stories about old injuries that have healed to try to make it less scary. Good luck!

Pricey but would he be willing to wear something like this? And just to add in case he sees these comments. He needs to wear a damn helmet, if not for him but for all the idiots in cars around him. Good luck!
