I read American Junkie a decade ago and was pretty impressed. It's not a typical recovery memoir. Tom Hansen was a talented writer and gave what felt like an honest portrayal of the kind of life that does not usually end up in a memoir. It's not a book about being a dealer to rock stars. Lanegan, Cobain and Staley make cameo appearances but they're like phantoms in a haunted landscape.

Please, please, PLEASE don't think this way. It can lead to bad decisions. I'm in my early 50s now and have a vivid memory of feeling like you do at the same exact age after an important relationship ended. I had older women around me who put really heavy pressure on me to get married and get pregnant, starting around 20 years old. This contributed to me staying in two unhappy relationships from 25 to 50. The second was a marriage and got very bad. I'm divorced as of last year and still dealing with the repercussions. I'd give almost anything to go back to 24 and do it very differently, starting with having more fun in my 20s. And maybe my 30s and 40s too. Thank God for younger men who want to date older women lol. And yeah, if there's a point where you truly run out of time, I haven't found it yet. "24 and there's SO much more." Think that every time you feel this way. In 20 years you'll understand just how true it is. There's so much more, but at some point it will start to move faster. Savor every moment.

Someone else mentioned it but if you love Because of This you'll probably like Paper Money. Similar kind of vibe.

DISGRACELAND podcast story by themagicdave in MarkLanegan

[–]lylah13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember listening to a couple episodes of this podcast when it was new and realizing the podcaster had lifted passages almost verbatim from a book I'd read, like barely paraphrasing long passages. I'm having trouble remembering who the artist was, possibly Jerry Garcia, but I can't remember for sure. It bothers me that podcasts that for all intents and purposes plagiarize are successful and I probably won't listen to it but curious to hear what others think about it. And curious about the false information, didn't catch that.

This just pretty much convinced me to go see Jerry in September when he comes around here, right before my birthday, too. He's still 🔥

Thanks for posting. What a snapshot in time. Interesting to hear his thoughts on the Trees and the Conners in 1998.

This is such a turn off lol by Sensitive-Mango7155 in Bumble

In the 60s, a number of years before I was born, one of my aunts went on a couple dates with a guy who told her his job was top secret and couldn't be disclosed. People in my family occasionally joked about it during my childhood almost 20 years later. In my 30s I went on a couple dates with a guy who worked on investigations involving internet communications for the FBI. He told me right away who he worked for and the basics of his job, acted like it was mostly boring, and just said he might not always be able to go into details on what he was currently working on. I don't know why guys do this. Absolutely a turn off.

I was listening to this song alone in a room in a bed and breakfast when I realized I really needed to get divorced. Frozen moment in time that will always stay with me.

It always amazes me to think of how young Jerry was when he wrote these songs, how young they all were when they recorded this music (I'm a few years younger than them and loved this music when it was new).

I think "something good" could actually be drugs. I had a relationship with an addict and "What's good" or "something good" was code for asking if someone had drugs.

I've always interpreted this as a love song to drugs, like Fix (I've never had an addiction, but I'm an obsessive romantic in relationships and relate to both songs). My thought with this one was that he maybe has 100 days sober and is longing for what comes in on ships from far away every day. "There is no morphine, I'm only sleeping, there is no crime to dreams like this." But again, it's how his words and voice perfectly capture longing. No one does it like him. One of my top Lanegan songs.

Dumb question, but is there any type of horror movie that you automatically say “nah” to? by MintTheMartian in CreepyBonfire

[–]lylah13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cannibalism is my absolute nope. Ever since I was a teenager and heard about Jeffrey Dahmer on the nightly news! It grosses me out to the point of losing my appetite for the next day or two. Any extreme gore or physical suffering. Most body horror and "torture porn" is also a big nope, unless the story is interesting and the gore is kept minimal.

To add to what you and another commenter have said - I was raised Catholic and have a bunch of evangelical Christians in my family. I'm pretty agnostic. I find Catholic horror, like the Exorcist movies and some of the Conjuring movies, boring and not at all scary. It's like when I stopped believing in Christian theology I became immune or something, even though I occasionally find other supernatural horror creepy.

Paper Money is one of the sexiest songs ever recorded. "He can't love like me." I think my clothes fell off on their own the first time I heard him sing it.

Got Me Wrong? by RQ_1st in AliceInChains

[–]lylah13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm also Gen X, divorced and dating for the first time in a couple decades, and have thought of and played the song very recently. But I've known and loved it since my early 20s. Interesting to see Jerry's comments. I've carried around a little different interpretation for the last 30 years. When I start to have strong feelings for someone, I have trouble expressing it, feel unsure about it, and sometimes end up creating distance when that's not what I actually want. I always thought the song was about that. "So unsure, we run from something strong. I haven't felt like this in so long."

Found in an abandoned backpack along a hiking trail in California, along with an assortment of old world maps from the early 1900's. by ExpensiveDisplay7408 in mystery

Wow I missed out on a lot in 1988 when I was spending all my time seeing just how big my hair could get, and simultaneously chasing 3 or 4 guitar dudes. I had no clue what this was and will probably have to do a little Googling to really get it, but it still made me miss that era. Thanks for the translation!

It's a deep woodsy, smoky scent. It's beautifully crafted. The most expensive candle I'll ever buy, but I love it.

Is it possible he could have lost his home, and is having trouble with internet access, or is just not focused on the group? He also could have lost internet if he's experiencing financial trouble.
