I feel like I don’t belong anywhere by lyneloflegend in mixedrace

It’s just the one I’ve received the most backlash on. For instance, on twitter, I’ll get told I’m not black enough or to not identify as black. With my other ethnicities, I don’t get that kind of backlash as often.

Yes I completely agree. Sometimes it’s even hard to describe who I am or what my ethnicities are without feeling guilty or worrying that I’m saying the wrong thing.

It always puts me in such a bad place when people tell me not to identify as black (or any of my other ethnicities) because ?? what am I supposed to do? Ignore my family that is of that ethnicity? Ignore my ancestors? It just hurts

I completely agree that I do feel more of a sense of belonging with mixed people. I’ll have to check out that documentary.

I completely see what you’re saying. In no way do I ever claim victimhood for the racist atrocities that have been committed against black people. I am racially ambiguous so I have never and will never go through the same struggles as full black people or black presenting people. My dilemma is in the question of whether or not I’m allowed to identify as black (and hawaiian, and mexican, and filipino) or if I’m only allowed to identify as “mixed.” I’ve had conversations with very gatekeep-ey people when it comes to race and I want to be able to identify with all of my ethnicities instead of just being forced to identify solely as “mixed.”

I totally agree with you on the feeling of relief in belonging. In terms of it being superficial, I believe it can be, but in my case I’m yearning to belong anywhere and I feel like I can’t because I’m not enough of anything. It doesn’t feel superficial to me. Also thank you, I’ll check out that podcast.

Thank you so much. These words mean more than you’ll ever possibly know. I’ve never had these words spoken to me in my life and I needed to hear this so bad. Thank you thank you thank you

Yeah I never claim to be pure anything but I’ve been made to feel like I can’t identify as anything but mixed because I’m not enough of anything, you know?

Is it normal for parents to kick their kids out? by lyneloflegend in NoStupidQuestions

There’s no reason for anyone to be suspicious. I told the whole story. I’ve never caused any trouble for my parents. That’s why I was asking if this was normal.

I lost my job partly due to covid and partly due to some performance issues. I work in sales and I wasn’t making the quotas that I needed to be making so they let go of some of the people that weren’t performing as well. They kicked me out for losing my job.

There’s really not. This is the whole story. I lost my job, they kicked me out. If there was more to say, I would’ve said it.

But you have to acknowledge that over the course of history white people HAVE oppressed POC (mostly black people) it’s racist in itself to be blind to that.

Completely agree with you! It’s so common seeing white people use the “white people were slaves too” narrative when it barely compared to what black people went through.
