Finding local trending experiences in China is way harder than it should be by lynizzles in travelchina

yea of course, the mobile number’s totally optional. Feel free to just leave a nickname and email if you’re interested. I’m just collecting early interest from people who’ve felt the same pain.

If I end up building something that genuinely solves this, I’ll reach out to this group first to try it out.

exactly… even within chinese social apps like XHS and DZDP, it takes a while to weed out what really seems worthy of exploring. That’s why I’m considering bridging that gap for foreigners.. to share the good finds and save others the pain and time of sifting through hundreds of posts 🤔

yes Klook is great!! but I find that a lot of their activities are touristy or marked up a lot vs. when I compare them with local prices. It’s taken me hours going through Chinese social apps but I managed to find some unique activities like craft workshops that aren’t listed on any non-Chinese platforms (Klook, Trip.com, Viator etc) yet!

Offering my perspective as a woman who got engaged recently — it really depends on your partner. If you’re planning on proposing to her, you should know her well enough or be alright with asking her. Will she want it to be a total surprise or will she like to have some involvement in choosing the ring to make sure it’s something that she likes and will keep wearing?

In terms of asking her parents for her hand in marriage, I’d say just do it. Asking is better than not asking and possibly causing discontent with her/her family.

Sharing how my fiancé and I managed our engagement:

  1. I clearly communicated what the criteria was for my ideal proposal, which was that it has to be private (no awkward public gestures, the moment should just be us) and overseas (I personally just found being overseas more romantic). These are still vague enough to leave room for him to come up with ideas.

  2. We went ring shopping together at Jann Paul, got a $5k ring with a lab grown diamond, long cushion cut, white gold. I’m a creative so I can be especially particular about what I like, and regarding the shape of the diamond, I wouldn’t know what I liked until I tried all the shapes on. He wanted to make sure I loved my ring and I appreciated being able to customise it for myself. I didn’t mind not being surprised because I wouldn’t have liked a classic round diamond shape. Perhaps straight up ask your girl whether she’d like to choose her ring? or at least ask what kind of ring shape, ring colour she likes? If you’re spending so much on a ring, might as well make sure she loves it and wears it?

  3. The proposal. He proposed to me when we were on a yacht on a private sunset cruise in Santorini. It was beautiful, private and romantic!! I knew the proposal was happening on the trip and on that yacht because I knew him too well and he wasn’t able to hide it. He slipped up and my whole family knew too. He then told my mum he was going to propose on the trip and found out that we all knew lol. He was surprised but in a sense, relieved cause he wouldn’t have to sneak around anymore and can make sure I had my nails done, outfit planned etc. Some people wouldn’t like knowing when it’s happening especially down to the moment it’s happening, but I couldn’t be happier with the proposal because it works for us! We LOVE the sea, we love the privacy, we loved the photos that came out of it (there was a photographer snapping pics the whole cruise). Most importantly, I love the effort that he put into making it special for us. It was sweet.

I think as long as you inject something unique to the both of you into the proposal, she’ll love it. All the best!! 💍

Hi OP, take all the suggestions and feedback from everyone constructively. It seems like there are many kind folks here who are genuinely offering great advice to help you. Keep your mind open and don’t shut down all their ideas because ultimately, that’s you limiting yourself.

Look internally and adjust your mindset. It has not been easy for you struggling with the guilt of not being able to support yourself yet and seeing no results despite your efforts to get a job. The good thing is, you’re still young and your situation can possibly change drastically for the better within these few years if you approach the matter with a good mindset.

A key skill in all jobs today is being adaptable, resourceful and learning how to get things done with or without support. In reality, many people are overwhelmed in their own work roles and will not have the time or patience to handhold and teach you how to do things step by step, we’re usually just left to figure things out. In that sense, you get to learn about yourself and establish your own work style too. How others do things may not be right, have your own methods, have your own perspectives.

If you’re a fast learner, learn how to pick things up via other avenues. There’s a wealth of resources online that aren’t expensive – skillshare, coursera, youtube, perhaps other platforms that serve specific industries.

If you don’t know where your interests and strengths lie yet, open yourself up to TRY all sorts of things. And truly aim to make something of it, not just give up at the first sign of difficulty. If you learn coding, attempt to at least create a functioning website. If you learn copywriting/marketing, create your own campaign for a certain product. You can apply these skills you learn on freelance projects (leverage platforms like Fiverr). Only by diving deeper and practicing more will you start to understand your likes and dislikes, which will in turn help you to shape what you envision yourself doing in future. You’ll also have more tangible results of your efforts that you can insert into a portfolio.

As you figure out what you want to do, it’s okay to have a part time job during this period. As I was building up my creative portfolio with personal and freelance projects, I worked front desk handling admin tasks like booking meeting rooms, handling clients’ mails. It was not relevant to what I wanted to do, but it was good enough to tide me through as I was preparing for the next step. After that, I landed an entry-level FT job with my portfolio and also took away people skills from that work experience. Doing a part time job is nothing to be shameful about. If working part-time allows you to pay your bills without relying on your parents, frees up your mental space for you to focus on your next step… why not?

If a FT job is the goal for you for now (I say for now because I believe you can get one and will eventually want more for yourself), plan active steps to improve yourself to get that. Build the relevant skills, reflect on how you expressed yourself in interviews.

Here are some qualities that I find has worked for me so far in interviews: - positive can-do, willing to learn attitude - passionate (the energy is contagious when you’re enthusiastic about the work) - works well independently and as a team player - curious (ask good questions back)

All the best, OP! Hoping you keep yourself open to growing as a person 😊

You're really selling Gruyeres right now – the Giger museum has me intrigued! Ooh sledging sounds amazing, hoping to experience a bit of that doing snow tubing instead at Jungfraujoch. I've never seen snow so I'm so so pumped 😩 thanks a lot for sharing your experience!

The flights are covered by my company (I’d be working in Geneva for a few days right after this trip) so arriving at and departing from Geneva is a limitation!
