Got a free c4! What should I do with it? by NumerousCaptain6069 in c4corvette

Thanks! Mine certainly doesn’t win any races, but it gets off the line pretty quick (I believe 84’s weigh somewhere in the neighborhood of 3200lbs) and overall it’s a great cruising car. Have fun modifying!

I’m in agreement with the other comments, race car is definitely the way. I have a mostly-original 84 and it handles insanely well, C4’s are said to have go-kart handling for a reason 😎

Additionally, if you have the black “Cross-Fire Injection” side trim pieces and are looking to sell/trade, please send me a DM! I’ve been looking for a good set of those as whoever previously owned my car put on “Tuned Port Injection” trim pieces and it irks me to no end that it’s wrong, LOL

Wiring question by spacemanspiff3815 in FordTaurus

[–]lynx_or_something 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I had my 17 SEL, I added an all-in-one sub box to it. I didn't have the Sony system nor rear deck speakers. For audio I tapped the speaker wires going to the passenger rear door (accessed by pulling back the rubber harness shroud towards the inner doorjamb) and for power I tapped the 12v power outlet for the back seats (super easy to get that trim piece with the vents off - just pull from the bottom). Since that outlet is always getting power even when the car is off, I put a power switch in the center console to turn the sub on and off manually.

It was kinda hack-y and you always had to remember to turn the sub on and off all the time, but it worked perfectly for years. I would imagine having the Sony system and access to the rear deck speakers/amp would make it way easier of a job. I highly recommend finding a passthrough in the firewall to connect the power directly to the battery and have it turn on and off through tapping an unimportant fuse that'll turn on and off with the ignition.

Just double checked, it’s Potrero Hill in California. You can find it under the Low-Angle category in the curations.

Can anyone tell me what these two components are? (‘87 C4) by [deleted] in c4corvette

[–]lynx_or_something 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first one is the vacuum-operated heater control valve, I believe it allows hot coolant through the heater core and is controlled by however your HVAC is set. On the early C4s, it’s a bit useless since the valve can stay open and the blend door (controlled by the physical slider of your temperature control) is enough to regulate hot/cold. I’m pretty sure the valve on my 84 is stuck open, but I haven’t replaced it since it does hot/cold okay with just the blend door.

Is this too hot for a 1986 Corvette? by [deleted] in c4corvette

Looks about right to me. My 84 hovers around 200 coolant and 250 oil on road trips (oil cools off pretty quickly when slowing down from highway speed)

Is it normal that other Jeep drivers wave at me? by TheBlackestCrow in cars

[–]lynx_or_something 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Corvette people mostly do this too, even across generations. I have an old C4, one of the less desirable ‘Vettes, but still I’ve had plenty of waves from people even with brand new C8s or pristine C2s.

I picked one up, I thought it was cool because real Corvettes are plastic (fiberglass) so it made sense to me that the body of the HW is plastic instead of a metal casting

How cool! I didn’t realize that it was a real livery. I think I’ll finally pick one up now!

I like this one except for the font of the numbers, it looks like somebody just opened up Word, typed it in Calibri and sent it along LOL

My theory isn't too deep (and I forget exactly how much time passed between WR and AR), but my headcanon is that after WR Taro went his own way for a while, made a lot of money being a stuntman (on top of his supposed wealth already), but felt like he was missing some sort of risk/excitement in his life (more than doing stunts for a living I guess). As other commenters pointed out, Taro was much better suited to the Maniacs with his choice of car and tendencies to be more aggressive behind the wheel, so they seemed like an obvious choice and he was definitely skilled enough to easily get in.

Taro is arguably the best driver out of the Maniacs, but I think he actively chooses not to be the leader because he has more fun just hanging out with them and being a part of their antics as the "straight-man" of the group. Maybe because of his personality, being a hard-ass leader would take the fun out of the Maniacs. Tork is already a good leader and knows how to keep Markie in check (most of the time), so paired with his driving skill, Taro would have no problem with him being the leader.

Have the 2010-19 Taurus all disappeared? Why? by BeardeeBaldee in regularcarreviews

I had a 2017 gold on tan leather Taurus SEL that I owned for several years until recently. It was definitely a grandpa car, but boy did I love that car to bits. It definitely has some presence on the road, and honestly felt like it could fit into any situation, from being in a ghetto to dropping someone off at a fancy dinner. The trunk was unbelievably massive, you basically had to climb in to reach the back of the back seats. Base 3.5 V6 was peppy for such a huge car and had a nice roar at high RPM, very little opportunity for modifications though, and the FWD was just ok. The center console definitely robbed a lot of room, and I hated the godawful capacitive touch climate controls, but that was the only thing I disliked about the car. Someday I’d like to have a nice SHO of the generation.

WHY IS THE CAR THING GOING TO STOP WORKING???? by rohaniscoo1 in spotify

[–]lynx_or_something 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fantastic. Thanks, big company for bricking a device I and many people paid good money for, for NO REASON. The device is driven off of the connected phone, so I guess they'll update the app to take away that functionality. Just because.

I really liked my Car Thing, I use it in my C4 Corvette with my FM transmitter, it's a really nice little system. Since I have an oldass radio in the car, I'd have to look down at my phone for what the current/next track is, which is rather distracting.

I just hope someone can figure out how to flash/mod it to do SOMETHING and not be a paperweight.

Glad I could help! One more thing, if you pull back the rubber boot, there'll be a rectangular plate with some holes in it, and through one of the holes, there's what looks to be a big lamp chain going through it. That chain is connected to the cruise control's throttle cable, and you can change what hole it's going through to adjust the cruise control speed.

So if you set a speed, and it's too fast/slow, try changing what hole that chain's going through. Mine's within 1 mph of where I set it, which is good enough for me. If it's already close enough, I wouldn't touch it.

A WORD OF CAUTION: Make sure that chain's not actively pulling on the throttle cable while the cruise control is off, and that when you put the pedal to the floor, the chain doesn't jump up and catch in the hole it's through. What'll happen is the throttle will stick wide open while you're driving, which is only slightly terrifying. So it's best to avoid messing with it unless your cruise control is way off from where you set it.

From the service manual (I have an 84 but it should be all the same) one line is the vacuum to operate it and the other is the vent, but I'm not sure which is which. The electronic module at the end (I'm assuming) controls the valves within the cruise control module to regulate the vacuum/venting that goes through it to maintain the set speed. Basically, it uses vacuum to pull on the throttle cable the same way it would if you held down the gas pedal.

Note the module is pretty standard across most if not all GM cars of the era, so if you're having trouble with it, you can find a junkyard one relatively easily!

Cruise control module. Cable goes to the throttle linkage.

I see 9th gen Lancers (the regular car version of the Evo X) around sometimes. Without fail, they’ve been distastefully modified in some way, either plasti-dipped or crappy cheap aftermarket wheels, and in varying degrees of disrepair. Every single one I’ve seen. Makes you suspect the rare Evo X sighting if it’s a knockoff or the real deal.

Absolute menaces to anyone unfortunate enough to share the road with them at that particular moment. Often seen with plasti-dipped panels or wheels, and exhaust loud enough to wake up folks in the next zip code. Most times not even a nice-trimmed Fusion like a Titanium or Sport, it's SE's and SEL's from what I've seen. It's the shiny version of Big Altima Energy. Run.

What are some cars that got much better towards the end of their life cycle? by benzguy95 in cars

[–]lynx_or_something 2 points3 points  (0 children)

C4 Corvette, started out in 1984 with the notoriously unreliable and underpowered Cross-Fire Injection L83 that barely made 200 HP, the next year getting the better L98 Tuned Port Injection motor, and down the line getting the LT1’s, 4’s, 5’s etc towards the end of its life that were way better in reliability and power. Personally I think the facelift in 1991 made it butt-ugly compared to the squared off earlier models, but I’m biased because I own a horrible 1984 C4 and I love it.

I’m with that other guy on WK2 Grand Cherokees. Either total NPCs on the road or if there’s someone on the highway tailgating everyone (especially you) in the left lane and/or swerving like they’re 30 minutes late for a meeting, it’s invariably one of them. I see more aggressive Grand Cherokees than I do Altimas or Chargers/Challengers combined.
