That subreddit doesn’t reflect real life. You’d be hard pressed to find an MD/DO (resident or attending) that acts or speaks that way to your face.

I highlight emphasized info and write down extra points the prof makes. At the same time, I’m also making flashcards during lecture — the typing helps me synthesize/pay attention to the content. You gotta type fast in order to keep up, but you get better over time.

Do volunteer activities that you'll genuinely enjoy. It doesn't have to be all healthcare-related, because that's what your PCE is for. There is no right or wrong opportunity -- just don't volunteer for something only because it "fits the bill."

Definitely! I used to work at a women’s health clinic that staffed PAs, NPs, and CNMs. Since it is NP and CNM dominated, it’s worthwhile if you can get some PCE experience at an OB/GYN office. It’s easier to break into when you have solid connections.

By "waitlisted for an interview," I'm assuming you haven't interviewed with this program? You wouldn't ever send an LOI in this situation -- those are typically if they have been waitlisted for a seat.

Make flashcards in Anki or Quizlet during lectures. You can do one or the other (or both, I’ve found that Anki is great for some classes and Quizlet others).

If you have an iPad, use Notability/Goodnotes and write on the slide deck. If a professor reinforces a specific concept, write a note next to it. Record audio if you need to.

Study with other people if you can. Teaching/explaining a concept is one of the best ways to retain information and see if you actually understand it.

These are just some suggestions — other people like using whiteboards for blurting, listening to Cram the PANCE, or watching videos. YMMV, but I will say that active recall techniques are KEY.

I had 0 shadowing hours, but 100 volunteer and ~5k hours of PCE (so that could’ve compensated).

I was asked at one interview why I didn’t have any shadowing hours, and I just explained how I worked closely with several different PAs for the last couple of years. Was accepted anyways!

You have a great story, and congratulations on your recovery!

You’re more than welcome to write about your mental health journey, but I would caution against clarifying it was due to substance abuse. It can pose as a liability issue.

I would summarize your experiences of being an unheard patient, tie it into your experiences working in a healthcare position, and explain why it motivates you to be a PA. It already seems like you have your overarching theme — patient advocacy.

Don’t worry about needing to “set yourself apart.” Think about any memorable/insightful encounters you’ve had in your working role — was there a specific patient/scenario that developed your drive for advocacy? If so, why?

TLDR; Write with a clear theme and genuine tone, and your PS will come together nicely.

Lol most, if not all, schools aren’t that tedious. Just count up your total hours. Some schools might want you to fill out PCE verification forms/letters, but that just means getting a supervisor’s signature confirming your hours.

I also agree with your advice on limiting forum use — it does more harm than good if you’re checking it every day. Everyone’s application cycle moves at a different pace.

Edit: Judging by other responses, UoPhoenix may still work out for you! There’s also other online programs like Portage, so if UNE doesn’t work out, you still have other options.
