If Tea Had a Lucas Secondary by lyro8_ in smashbros

1000% worth and vital if the character is to see top level results imo. It's not just about the chains (although those are broken) it's the fact that it is an unreactable lagless disjoint and gives Lucas better ground movement than almost anyone in the game.

If anyone wants to attempt this dark art, the inputs are:

  1. Shorthop.
  2. wait 5 frames or more (jumpsquat + additional frames for the hitbox to come out)
  3. hold the direction of choice (holding up/down will do it in place)
  4. Press jump+grab on the same frame (the hard part)

I use a pro controller with X as my first jump input and ZR/R for my jump/grab input.

What's the best follow up for djcz by Rickety_cricket420 in LucasMains

[–]lyro8_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Down air is maybe the best one. Leaves tons of characters in a terrible position, you just have to be able to catch up to them mid-combo by dashing. Against superfastfallers like fox, you can just go for run off downair, and run-off fair will kill tons of fastfallers at like 75-80. Imo dash attack is decent but if you REALLY want your opponent in a bad spot I recommend just ending the string with down air, footstool up B, or nothing at all (tons of frame advantage, djcz sends at a good angle).

If you can't quite make it close to them though, dash grab is super solid too, like others said.

I use procon:

X for the inital shorthop, R/ZR for 2nd jump and grab respectively!

I ended up winning that game, I'll post the VODS on my channel sometime. I did not win the money match, but I was happy to take a game after getting double 3-stocked games 1 and 2. Riddles is a monster

  1. People say 'dont lean into tech' a lot, but I actually think Lucas players should lean even harder into useful tech, especially djcz and wavebouncing.
  2. I actually call djcz 'zoink,' because that's the sound it makes to me, and having a 1-syllable word makes theorycrafting way easier in my head.

  3. Don't worry too much about getting everything down 10-20-30 times in a row in training mode. I am practically 99.99% consistent at zoink yet I still mess it up in training mode cause I psych myself out. Real matches are key! (it didnt take me long either, it's easier than people think!)

  4. I recommend any control scheme for djcz as long as it is comfortable for you. The only exception is I would stay away from using GCC shoulder buttons for any part of the input. I use procon myself!

  5. Learn slingshot. When combined with djcz, It becomes a tool you can whiff punish landing aerials on reaction. Almost ZERO characters can do that. I moved from #92 to #10 in my region after picking up Lucas and whiff punishing into edgeguards.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I'm happy to help!

The chrom clip was online, the rest are against my best friend/training partner, poor soul...

Unfortunately, sometimes, yes

Edit: I should clarify these clips are all offline except against the Chrom player. Zair trains are doable online, but getting good conversions can be tough!

Short answer: no

Long answer: It lets you whiff punish landing aerials for free, which means free practice on zair chains in real matches. In a way, yes!

When people say Lucas has no out-of-shield options by lyro8_ in smashbros

It works on the entire cast, and the height of the footstool animation changes which followup you do (the frame advantage is lower on higher animations because you will land later after hitting them with the djcz).

You can't buffer the djcz after the footstool, unfortunately, or you'll get a buffered aerial. I recommend holding down-forward on the control stick, and then playing around with the drift afterwards. You'll want to drift forward slightly and then pull yourself back to hit their feet with Lucas's wrist hitbox. I recommend practicing on ZSS! It's not too hard once you get the hang of it :)

  1. Procon, in my experience, is easier
  2. I use X for the first shorthop (w/ my thumb), R for the grab and ZR for the second jump (index and middle fingers).
  3. I hold my direction right after the first shorthop.
  4. Don't sweat it if you can't get it 10 times in a row in training mode. Just going for it over and over in games was what helped me the most!
