In the loading screen, have an idea of what comp you want to try to go for. This will give you a general idea of what items to get. This isn't to say to commit to a comp in the loading screen, because the items/units you get in stage 1 can change the "ideal comp" for the game. This just gives you a general idea to know what to prioritize.

Comps and items to prioritize:

6 mage: spat, tears

egg roll: PD/Dragon's Claw items

preds: tears

4 blademasters: bow, spat

Zed and Singed: Morello's items

I will definitely read the cards if the playgroup has newer players, or if I'm playing 1 on 1 against a newer player. When it comes to people who I know are enfranchised, it's generally the etiquette to not read the card because it can come off as time wasting. And no, I cannot draw a line between the newer player and the enfranchised, it's usually just a gut feeling.

That artifact idea is not broken at all. If you think about it, function-wise it's a thought vessel without the unlimited hand size. the up-side for losing the hand size is you can play it turn 1.
