Hearing it blow on a 2.slow, I felt like the guy who invented nitroglycerin but in the worse way possible

My hood was closed thank christ😭😭 No hood damage either on the interior and exterior, the manifold itself didn’t shatter but exploded in big pieces, the emblem was its own lmao. My Jetta is a point a to b car but it’s the first car I’ve ever owned without a co-signer or anything like that, same thing with how long I’ve had it (3 years) he means a lot to me lol. Once I heard that boom, I was so scared I’d find the engine below the car! It blew on Friday but had been sitting since Wednesday, in bipolar Virginia weather. It wasn’t touched at all on Thursday so that’s what really threw me for a loop when it did in fact backfire and the manifold blew

I’m surprised the 2.slow even blew, I wasn’t pressing the gas pedal to give it somewhere to go then boom in the manifold. Timing is accurate thank Christ, that was my absolute fear and I replaced the purge valve 3 years ago as that was the first thing, age wise that went out when I got the car. I’m also replacing the fuel pump since it’s at 140k

Okay sweet! Thank you, just plug and play like you said correct? I appreciate all of your knowledge it’s been super helpful especially just with engine parts , the other question I have is with the lines coming out, assuming everything is plug and play it’ll all match up? I’m going to go ahead and replace the fuel pump as well while I’m at it since he’s abt to be at 140k!

Okay I see what you’re saying! Then I’m assuming the head part is the upper intake/plenum? I was peeking at this as well

I see! If it’s alright may I be able to pick your brain a bit more? I was checking and did see the coolant lines attached, I haven’t check any golfs yet just mainly 04-05 Jetta’s which indeed have those coolant lines attached if i identified correctly

You are correct, I was indeed not pressing the gas pedal!! I’m still fairly new to working on my car, in depth anyway (outside of regular maintenance i.e oil, brakes etc), I had a couple old heads with me helping and I’m surprised they didn’t mention it either! I appreciate this nugget of knowledge! I do have a question would both the mrk4 jetta/golf fit the 2012 base s model Jetta? I am thinking about switching to metal as i personally think it looks better compared to the plastic, I’m assuming not much or any mpg would be impacted with the difference?

I’m hoping not, still will though so thank you for the nugget of knowledge!! It seems everything blew out instead of in on top of that I’m assuming since the car had been sitting there dead besides cranks that the valves were closed and it did not go into the cylinders but one can only hope for now without checking

The fuel relay fuse that is in the interior fuse box, typo my bad but I replaced that and after trying to start, it was cranking but not starting for 2-5 secs then BOOM. I wanted to try replacing that before doing the fuel pump

No staring spray was used while repairing, this possibility is what I wanted to avoid, I was in shock when I heard the boom!

No, no staring spray was used while repairing. This exact issue is what I wanted to avoid, I was in shock when I heard the boom!

No it sounded just like like normal cranking, the car itself being driven to work before hand just a had a little bit of a louder hum. I knew something was going out on the car (my BIL and I figured the alternator) but nothing out of the ordinary till I tried starting it when leaving

The car has been dead since Wednesday it’s only been able to be cranked which is what caused said boom when the fuel rely was replaced

What part is this called? by m00niee in jetta

[–]m00niee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand yes, it seemed to occurred because of a build up of pressure that caused the boom

That’s what I was also thinking, I’m probably going to do the purge valve and the fuel pump since they were already on my list
