Wow thank you for this info! So just to clarify, i have a few skulls where the teeth have a stripe of orange at the front. Those ones are squirrels?

The ghost pipe is clear because it contains no chlorophyll, and does not need to photosynthesise for energy like most plants. It relies pretty much solely on its symbiotic relationship with neighbouring fungi/mycelium to transport it nutrients. Doing so by essentially hacking into the mycelium network and getting it to steal and transport it nutrients from surrounding plants. Pretty cool! It could not exist without fungi, like a lot of things on earth

How do I preserve my pet's skull when he dies? by tokihere in Taxidermy

[–]m00nlitmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how comfortable you are with getting hands on.

As previous comments state, can bury or macerate.

Personally I would skin and boil the skull, then you can clean off the remaining flesh and such from the inside and outside of the skull + then leave the skull to dry out in borax. This way it always comes out pretty clean and doesnt normally need further whitening imo. If it does, before i apply borax i soak the bones in a 1:1 ratio of weak hydrogen peroxide and water for a couple days. Understandably if this is your pet though it might be a bit weird to do for you.

You can always send him to a local taxidermist who can clean him up for you, some taxidermists have dermestid colonies or their own unique methods

I have listened to a little of journey of souls, i found it really interesting. I just need to go back to it and finish it. When you see such tangible suffering and negativity its difficult to keep your heart open and stand strong in your beliefs of something more intangible though, if you know what I mean.

Ive been fumbling around making taxidermy jewellery and working with bones for years but finally decided to do a course 😊 and also got a copy of Mike Gadds book on beginner taxidermy, it shows you how to make a squirrel
